What is the exact relationship between Smokey, Jacob, and Jacob's enemy?
Jacob and his nemesis (henceforth refered to as Flagg, because I'm a Stand fan) seem to be engaged in a series of "spiritual chess matches" over the fate of the Island. Flagg seems to believe that humanity is irredeemable, and therefore has no business coming to their magical Island and defiling it with violence and so on. Jacob seems to think that the Island should be used to give humanity a chance at redemption. You can almost see dozens of groups of losties being brought to the Island by Jacob over the course of history. Where exactly does Smokey fit into this struggle? I know that many people are convinced that Smokey is Flagg, but I'm not so sure. For one thing, Ben has had dealings with Smokey, as evidenced by theplughole in the secret chamber of his house, and the fact that he knew its purpose was to judge people. I don't think that Ben could be manipulated by Smokey without realizing what it was. But then the question is, why would Smokey order ben to help Flagg-Lock! e? My theory is, Alex wasn't Smokey. Remember, Alex only appeared AFTER the smoke monster went back into it's hole. Alex was Flagg, taking advantage of Ben's fragile state of mind to bend him to his will. I think that, in the battle between Jacob and Flagg, the Smoke Monster is neutral. Either one can use it to his pruposes- Jacob can use it to rid the survivor groups of unrepentant killers, for instance. Smokey is a resource either one can use.
