This theory is just some thoughts I have about Jacob's "Touch" and why the Smoker Monster scans people's memories. Thanks for reading.
So Jacob went out of his way to touch certain characters in 'The incident.' A lot of people are saying it was a sort of way of Jacob bringing them to the island, with Locke also getting a little dose of healing. I definitely agree with that. I also believe this is why the monster scans people's memories. If fake Locke was indeed Jacob's enemy, and the monster was seemingly helping that man, then it would imply to me that Jacob is also enemies with the smoker monster.
So that said, I would assume that smokie scans people's memories to search for signs of Jacob himself. Who have we seen scanned? Well I think we are to assume Locke was in Walkabout (that's up for debate I guess)as well as Eko and Juliet. All three passed with flying colors, but why? Well it is because they had no memories of Jacob. Juliet had never seen him, because after all, she had the only non-Jacob flashback in the finale making it very clear they had never met. Eko had never met him, or at least that's what we have been led to believe. And then we get to Locke, I know you are thinking that of course he has memories of Jacob, because that's what we just saw in 'The Incident." But the truth is, he doesn't remember that at all..
Now we can look back at young and old Ben. Old Ben had claimed to never have seen Jacob, this was false, after all Jacob was the one who healed him when he was a boy. How many of you have read "Jacob's Hands?" Don't worry, I haven't either. But it is about a man who can heal with his hands. This is what happened to Ben, he was healed when Jacob touched him. We have seen this before, when Jacob placed his hand upon John and brought him back from 'his' fatal injury.
How does he heal with his hands? And why do you not remember it after it happens? Well you could make the point that Jacob is able to send you back by just touching you. Send Rachel to before she had cancer, send Locke back to moments before his hit the ground, sent back Ben to before he was shot. When you get "sent back" you would obviously have no memories from it because it in essence..did not happen. So Locke might remember falling, he might remember the impact, but he would not remember the brief moment when he had met Jacob. Now saying he is "sending them back" is just an easy way of explaining it, I don't know how it really would work I guess. You could say he is able to reverse time in a way that also doesn't actually affect the physical world. And that he can't close a bullet hole, but he can make the bullet hole irrelevant.
But to get back on subject, this is what I think is happening. Jacob can alter or manipulate history and the monster does not want this to happen. The monster would be the course correction side of it. And the monster knows Jacob can do this, so he scans memories looking for signs of Jacob's attempts to change things. And if he finds them, he kills that person. Another instance of course correction by the monster would be Keamy's attack on Othersville where Ben clearly said "he changed the rules." After finding that out who did Ben turn to? Mr. Course Correction himself.

So that leaves the temple. Judging by the drain in Ben's house and the tunnel entrances blocked off by water, you could assume these are ways to keep the monster out. So it would give a little to the idea of Jacob's people (the others) being against the monster in some ways. Which, I think, would imply that the Others/Jacob really are trying to change things. Anyway, just some random stuff. Thanks for reading!
