This is a theory I have had for a long time. It has absolutely nothing to do with time travel, nothing to do with the upcoming war, and nothing to do with Dharma. Sorry for bucking a trend.
My theory involves a prophecy. The person, whom the prophecy is about, will be awarded with great power and perhaps eternal life (a la Richard). The prophecy is very ancient and of Egyptian origin.
One aspect of the prophecy is that the chosen one will be the leader of the others. A more important aspect of this prophecy is that the person will have "sacrificed" their closest male relative.
We now have evidence of 3 leaders of the others choosing to do such a thing. Ben killed Roger. Locke had Sawyer kill his father. And now we see Eloise Hawking spending an entire lifetime ensuring that she is able to kill Daniel in her past.
As furhter evidence for my theory I give the reaction of the others when Locke was unable to do the deed in season 4. They were really upset or more to the point disapointed. When Locke did not kill Cooper they walked away from him. Only when he returned with hsi dead body did they accept him as the new leader.
I am willing to assert that a second part of the prophecy entails ressurection. Ben does not really believe in the prophecy. He just wanted the trappings of power that fullfilling the prophecy would give him. He killed Locke and thought he was dead for good. He is aware of the prophecy though, so Locke showing up alive again didn't floor him, it just put him into shit out of luck mode. He quickly turned to plan B ... until smokey Alex threatened to kick his ass.
Smokey and Richard have one job. To see the prophecy fullfilled. They are working together to guide Locke. Locke will be the one to finally fulfill "it".
Whatever "it" may be.
