I’ve had this idea in my head for the past several episodes of Lost and felt the need to get it out there before the finale, just in case I’m right.
Is it just me or does it seem like Jack is setting himself up to CAUSE the incident rather than stop it? We don’t know exactly what the incident is, but it seems likely that setting off a hydrogen bomb at the Swan would be the definition of an incident. Perhaps that explosion let the electromagnetic energy escape in unmanageable doses, Dharma found a way to contain it, but couldn’t contain it completely and had to let out some of it in small doses via button pushing. This sounds similar to what happens when there are problems at a nuclear reactor – they contain the radiation, but have to let off some of it in small, non-lethal doses so that the entire situation doesn’t become unstable (See The West Wing, season 7). What makes me think that this is the case above all else is Sayid’s Chernobyl comment when exploring the hatch back in season 2, when he said that the cement covered underbelly of the hatch looked just like Chernobyl. If it looks just like post-melt! down Chernobyl, that likely means that the area was hit with some sort of nuclear disaster, most likely, the explosion of a hydrogen bomb.
So to recap, someone sets off the H-bomb at the hatch, the area has to be covered in cement, and Jack/Faraday’s solution was actually what always happened.
