Lost is the most intriguing show since the 1960’s when Patrick McGoohan gave us The Prisoner. In fact, many comparisons can be made between these programs. However, I have often feared that in the end, Lost will give us an ending in which we are told that “none of this really happened.” In The Prisoner, McGoohan had tired of the show close to the end of the first season. He had envisioned it running for only one season. In his ending, we realized that all of what we had seen were just ideas in McGoohan’s head about the cold war, communisum and the bomb. None of it was real.
We are being told that by the end of The Incident, nothing will be the same. I fear that we are going to hear “wake up, Dorothy – you’ve just been having a bad dream.” Many people were not happy with that ending to The Wizard of Oz either.
Of course, it could be that Daniel was right and that Jack will manage to cancel the past and change the future (and kill a lot of people instead of just a few) so that he won’t have any more pain. Good grief. Jack’s pain was pretty bad BEFORE the crash. Most of the other Losties have been changed for the better or helped by their time on the island. Kate was no longer going to prison. Sawyer began to have friends and finally found his soul mate. Jin & Sun had a child and their marriage was put back together. Locke could walk. Rose no longer had cancer. Sayid was no longer just a killer. Hurley became a catalyst for bringing people together. It was his intervention that began the change in James Ford. He was no longer just the overweight, unlucky rich guy. Most of the deaths that occurred seemed to be the result of the actions of others: Shannon by the hand of Anna Lucia, Anna Lucia & Libby by Michael (as a result of his interaction with Ben’s grou! p), Charlie’s death was a result of the others, etc. The two exceptions I can think of are Mr. Eko and Boone. Jack however, is a problem. He never let the island do its work on him. He fought it constantly.
So, Jack changes things and none of this ever happened. Jack gets off the plane in LA, but his life is miserable. Memories creep back in. Finally, in desperation he calls out for Clarence (the angel) – “I was wrong! Take me back Clarence!” (A Wonderful Life).
Please Lost producers & writers – Don’t put us through this. Oz should be real, even with a slight “course correction.” Our Losties and many of the others have been through so much, and we have gone through it with them, for it to be a total fake out.
