Sorry if this was discussed before…
The other day I was reading an Egyptian mythology book I found at home and I read about a huge black snake demon-like god which represented chaos and darkness. So I did some research and I found some interesting facts about this Egyptian god…
APEP (THE SMOKE MONSTER)
-Was an evil demon of the underworld (a word reference in the Swan in egyptians hieroglyphics), opponent of light, god of all darkness and chaos. Was the very embodiment of the powers of dissolution, darkness and non-being. In earlier forms: thunderstorms, lightning, whirlwinds, and iron. (remember the flashing and lighting like lights it has in early appearances?)
-Apep was viewed as the greatest enemy of Ra (R.A.= Richard Alpert?). Each morning as the solar barque ( like the Black Rock? possible relation to Richard?) was about to emerge into the daylight, it was attacked by the great serpent whose terrifying roar echoed through the darkness.
-According to some mythologies, Apep hypnotized Ra and all of his entourage (maybe what happened to Danielle’s team?) who sailed with him, with the exception of Seth, who resisted the serpent's deadly stare and repulsed him with the thrust of a great spear.
-Husband of Taweret ( the island statue), who was thought to help women in labor and to ward off evil spirits and demons who intended harm to mother or baby. She was also thought to help with matters of female sexuality and pregnancy.
-It was represented as a gigantic black snake. He was a huge serpent who was thought to have existed at the beginning of time in the waters of primeval chaos prior to creation and his power was so great that it was thought that he would continue to exist in an endlessly malevolent cycle of attack, defeat and resurgent attack. The serpent is also symbolically portrayed in some temple scenes
-He was a sort of void or "black hole" forcing those he swallowed into that non-existence which the Egyptians feared so greatly
-Being completely outside of the natural world, he was believed to require no nourishment other than to "breathe" his own shouts. His roar was so loud that it shook the underworld.
-He was thought by the ancient Egyptians to be over 16m long, with skin as hard as flint (a black rock).
-Each night he attempted to disrupt the passage of the solar barque of Ra. At times Apep was successful and when this occurred stormy weather would occur. (It is raining when it takes the Pilot, and when it chases Juliet & Kate, and when it kills Shannon)
-Shadows, souls, doubles, and spirits were Apep's confederates and formed parts of him. Apep led an army of demons that preyed on the living and the dead. (mmm the “undead”? Christian, Alex, etc)
-Apep was said to live underneath the world, because of his dislike of the sun. (Underneath the Temple?)
-Apep was known to have a gaze that would enchant any man he looked at (maybe that was what Locke saw?).
-Apep became also the “soul eater”, which would eat your “soul” (actually in Egyptian terminology only a part of the concept) if you have “sinned”. (well, we know he judge your past sins, like he did with Eko and Ben).
-I also think the snake is reference in Smokey’s sounds, some of them sounds like a attlesnake’s tail.
TAWARET (THE STATUE)
-According to one ancient myth, her husband Apep could only come out during the night and so she represented all that was evil during the day. (the shadow of the statue=the monster?)
-Taweret guarded the paths to the mountains of the west which led to the underworld (again, the shadow of the statue) and could also use magic to help the deceased pass safely through that dangerous and frightening land.
-When acting as a protective force she is described as a goddess. She was thought to help women in labor and to ward off evil spirits and demons who intended harm to mother or baby. She was also thought to help with matters of female sexuality and pregnancy.
-Expectant mothers often carried amulets depicting Taweret to invoke her protection. (just like Amy did).
-She had the paws of a lion, the back of a crocodile and the head and body of a pregnant hippo but with the addition of a woman´s hair. She often wears a short cylindrical headdress topped by two plumes or the horns and solar disk of Hathor, bearing the "Sa", representing protection, or the ankh, representing life. (Amy’s amulet)
-She was loyal to Horus (Horus=Horace? Maybe that’s why he protect his child?)
-Like Bes (Bes=Ben?), she was both a fierce demonic fighter as well as a popular deity who guarded the mother and her newborn child.
BES (BEN)
-Bes is described as a demon, but he was not considered to be evil and he became very popular with every day Egyptian people because he protected women and children above all others. (Ben seems to have a thing with pretecting mothers and their childs: Penny, Danielle…).
-He was a supporter of Ra (Richard?) who protected him from his enemies. As a result, he was a god of war who protected the pharaoh and the people of Egypt from evil forces.
-He was particularly protective of women and children and was often depicted with the young Horus (Horace?).
ADAM & EVE
It is believe that the sanke in the Old Testament has it’s origin in Apep. Much of the Old Testament has to do with good vs. evil and Satan plays the role of the snake or serpent. Especially with the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Even and she being tempted by the “serpent.” I believe that Adam and Eve will have and encounter with the monster. (maybe that’swhy they hide in the cave?)
Plus, look what I found serching about egyptian mithology in the internet:
Christian Jacq (“Christian Jack”)
A French author and Egyptologist. He has written several novels about ancient Egypt, notably a five book suite about pharaoh Ramses II, a character whom Jacq admires greatly. One of his books trilogy is named The Judge of Egypt Trilogy: In the Age of Ramses, Egypt's power in unchallenged. However, a dark conspiracy seeks to strike at the Pharaoh... only an idealistic judge (the monster?) and a young doctor (Jack?) stand between Egypt and oblivion. The three books of this seires are called: Beneath the Pyramid (beneath the temple?), Secrets of the Desert, Shadow of the Sphinx (sounds familiar?)
Hope it makes sense, and sorry for my English, is not my mother language!
