"Two players. Two sides. One is light, one is dark."
This is the statement made by John Locke to Walt about the game of backgammon. It has long been speculated that this statement has a deeper meaning which is directly interwined with the true purpose of LOST. However, upon watching the Season 5 finale, I believe this statement to be literally a case of light -v- dark, of good -v- evil.
"The Incident" introduced us to two characters; first being the long anticipated appearance of Jacob and the second character being a man in black, who I would like to refer to as Sinister in this theory. It is clear from watching these two "men" exchange words that they have deeply contrasting beliefs about the nature of humanity. Jacob believes in free will, in choice without manipulation or influence, and in the ultimate strength within humanity to progress as a society. Whereas Sinister believes in fate, in the corruption and greed of man, and how man will never be able to break the cycle. Furthermore, it seems like both "men" have put their beliefs in the nature of man into direct competition, and that Sinister has won every time. Quite frankly it seems that Sinsiter is pissed off at this stage of playing the game, and is determined to find a way to finally end the neverending struggle which is to kill Jacob.
But he needs a loophole and I believe the loophole is twofold. Firstly, Sinister needs a loophole because he can't kill Jacob himself. He needs humanity to prove their inability to break the cycle of corruption and greed and this can only be achieved by humanity themselves murdering Jacob. Now the actual loophole involves two aspects; the first aspect is Sinister manifesting himself as dead people in order to influence their loved ones and the second aspect is that a human being must do the killing. So Sinister chose John Locke to be his vessel because one, he could be easily manipulated and two, he knew that by masquerading as John he could influence Richard (because he had faith in John in the leader) and Ben (because not only did he see someone he felt was inferior to him be resurrected by "Jacob", but also because he knew he could use Ben's pain as ammunition in turning him against Jacob). This is simply put the reason why Sinister chose John as his vessel in orchestrati! ng the murder of Jacob, and ultimately to prove the destructiveness of man.
It is quite sad that John Locke's legacy was that he was used and abused by the father figures in his life; from Cooper to Sinister masquerading as the island, John was manipulated by people he put his faith in. However, as Jack told Richard, we shouldn't give up on John just yet. Jacob is dead, but I believe after seeing what he is capable of (such as his touch resuscitating John) that he isn't fully gone; he just needs a new vessel in order to lead his people against Sinister. Not only does he need the others on his side, but he also needs Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Sun, Jin, Hurley, Miles and possibly Sayid to believe in him. How can he do this? By literally resurrecting the real John Locke. His dead body as we have seen is on the island thanks to Ilana, Bram and co. What better way can Jacob make the losties believe in him by resurrecting a man they believed to be dead. Especially for Jack who already has faith in the island thanks to John. So simply put, the coming war will be! betwenn Sinister and Jacob, the good of man -v- the evil of man, and both sides will be personified by John Locke.
Finally, before you blow me out of the water, just think back to Claire's dream in Season 1. John was in it;

See his eyes? John Locke, one entity, has one black eye and one white eye. Both sides are staking a claim to the entity known as John Locke, and both sides will be represented by John Locke in Season 6. I think if what I am claiming turns out to be true, then this more than anything (including Adam & Eve) will prove that Darlton and JJ always knew where they wanted LOST to ultimately go.
