So I have been a firm believer in whatever happened, happened all season long but after last nights episode I no longer so sure.
I think it's pretty clear why some of the key 815ers were sent to 1977. Their purpose was to alter the circumstances of the original timeline by destroying the Swan energy pocket. Why? TO SAVE JACOB's LIFE.
Let's explain.
I didn't believe they would detonate a hydrogen bomb on the Island for the simple reason that it would destroy the entire Island in 1977 meaning that it wouldn't be around for the 815 crash in 2004. In fact, I screamed a moment of triumph when Jack dropped the bomb down the hole and nothing happened. But alas, our dear Julliet decided to finish the job and the bomb did go off. My prediction is that the effect will be just as Daniel said, the energy pocket will be neutralized but the Island will not be destroyed. In doing so, the 815ers will have successfully changed the circumstances of the original timeline. This in turn will save Jacob's life. They HAD to change the circumstances of the original timeline so that the fake Locke will never be around to convince Ben to kill Jacob in 2007.
The battle between good and evil involves Jacob vs the Smoke monster who we saw in human form last night at the beginning of the episode. Jacob was able to draw the 815ers to the Island by visiting them at different stages in their lives. Notice too how Jacob went out of his way to make PHYSICAL CONTACT with each 815er he visited. He touched young Sawyer's hand when he gave him the pen. Likewise with Jack when he gave him the Appolo bar. He touched young Kate on her nose. He placed his hand on Locke's shoulder after he had fallen out the window. He leaned over the guitar case and touched Hurley's chest in the cab. He put his hand on Sayid's shoulder when asking for directions in LA. All these touches were Jacob's way of drawing the people he needed to the Island in order to save himself in 2007. He knew all along that the final outcome would be his death and yet with the 815ers in 1977 attempting to change things, he would save his own life by re-setting the timeline.
It sucks to be wrong, but I truly believe that we will see that the plan succeeded and the timeline has indeed been altered in season 6.
FEB. 2010 is so far away.... =(
At least we can FINALLY stop seeing all these ludicrous BLANK is Jacob theories...
