Ok so I've read a few theories on the Jacob/lostie flashbacks and they all seem to be focusing on the fact that Jacob touched everyone but not on what actually happened in them. In every flashback Jacob gives each lostie just a tiny little push that will eventually lead them all to getting on the plane.
Examples: he buys kate the lunch box so she won't get in trouble making it "ok" for her to steal...evenutally turns in to "ok" for her to blow up her step-dad/real dad.
he gives sawyer the pen to write the letter. the letter is the cause of all the rage that's been building up
some instigating is greater then others. with sayid for example it didn't take much at all and jack just needed to hear the actually words. Hurley on the other hand was the exact opposite and a conversation needed to ensue.
I think that each scene is a huge summery of each character and if you've never seen the show before and were just shown those seens you could make a pretty good assumption on what their personalities are.
