Here’s another theory from the what ever happened happened camp:
I think when our characters are speaking of destiny they are really referring to history. Eloise, Widmore and possibly Ben have had a knowledge of the future as it relates to their past. They know that Daniel, Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Sayid have to be on the island because they were on the island in 1977. What they are doing is history.
Although I personally believe in the possibilities of alternate time lines and parallel realities, I don’t think the LOST writers are going there. This is because of the way they’ve always told their stories.
For example-we knew that Kate was in the custody of the law, we just didn’t know why. Later they showed us.
We knew Ben eventually joined the others, we just didn’t know how that worked out. When we saw how it was, it surprisingly involved Sayid shooting Ben and Kate/Sawyer just turning him over to the others.
We knew there was an incident, we just haven’t yet seen how or what actually occurred. Now that we are about to see it, we are aware that it involves our Lostie friends once again.
This already happened, but as Daniel said, it is their present.
Even though he told himself he wouldn’t say anything to Charlotte, he did, just as she remembered shortly before her death. And because of her last words about not eating chocolate before dinner, we know this point in time (1977) is when he told her-just as she remembered.
All their efforts to change what they think is the past is actually creating it.
A side theory-if they do manage to change things, I think season 6 will be about changing it back.
Now I have to comment on why Eloise and Widmore feel the need to help “destiny” along. (I think she knew so much because she had Daniel’s journal. Of course this means that she doesn’t know now what happens next because he doesn’t come back to 2007.) At first I put this down to them being control freaks and not trusting things to just happen. But now I wonder if there is someone out there, who also has knowledge of these past events and is trying to stop them. This could be part of that war they’ve been talking about.
Which brings me to this idea: While Jack and his group are working to try to change things in 2007 Locke is trying to find a way to get them back. What if… just before Jack is to take that final step or push that button or detonate that bomb, Locke stops them by bringing them all back to the future?
And, what if this is what has always happened, but Ilana and Bram are there to STOP Locke from stopping Jack and thus a real catastrophe occurs? (What ever happened happened except if you have a big mysterious silver crate.) I know, how can I say this when if what happened already happened? That’s in the past or 1977, but what if what they change is actually in the present of 2007? You can’t change the past. . .but you can change the present, if it’s not really history already. . . unless Ilana and Bram are from the future. . . ahhhh. I’ve got another nose bleed!!! Isn’t it amazing what one TV show can do.
A few other comments I need to make about Daniel. I think he did some important work while with Dharma in the 70’s and possibly designed the Lamppost. I know Eloise said it was built before Dharma was on the island, but she wasn’t about to tell them it was Daniel who has been traveling in time on the island because maybe that would make them hesitate about going back.
I also think that Daniel’s time traveling experiments had him jumping through time where he was able to witness even more than we know or he would remember. He possibly saw Desmond many times making him the best choice for his constant. (He wouldn’t want to pick his mother now, would he?) I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of either Desmond or Daniel because they are two of my favorite characters.
Another thing I think we may see is the children of Dharma leaving the island. We already know that Charlotte and Miles leave while young, but there are others there as well that if there is going to be trouble, may be evacuated. Perhaps it’s the children of Dharma that are coming back to cause trouble, get revenge and retake the island. This would tie the past 1977 with the more current 2007 time line nicely.
