Something has been bothering me about Ben for a while.
I know I heard a while ago and recently Carlton Cuse said it again, that they used the first season of Lost to find what kind of show it was, and had the entire show's plotline summarized in between the 1st and 2nd season.
The 2nd season featured Ben in a very significant role. But then I find out later that Michael Emerson was originally only signed up for 3 episodes and then they liked him so much that they signed him up for as long as they could. His emergence as a main character in that time doesn't coincide with what Carlton says about when they wrote the season.
This leads me to believe that Ben is one gigantic red herring. A guy that was layered into the story in a pivotal role but by the end will prove to not be nearly as important as we suspect. They're starting to show it now with Locke implying that Ben has never talked to Jacob. He has proven to be an ultra-intelligent character, and you never know if he is lying or not, which makes a perfect contender for a red herring in the entire Lost story.
I mean, they could have had a "leader of the Others" that shows up later that has Ben's role with a different actor, but c'mon, I wanna feel smart right now.
