Even in "Dead Is Dead" Widmore stated that he spent 20 years looking for the island. This seems impossible since we see him being banished from the island around 1993. What would make this possible is if Widmore arrives on the island in 2007, possibly in Ilana's crate, and ends up turning the FDW and ending up being sent off island into the year 1984. He then spends 20 years til finding the island via his freighter in 2004.
This makes 2 Widmores existing and he is caught in a time loop as the Losties. This would explain why Ben can not kill him. Maybe Widmore turning the wheel in 2007 lines up the timeline on the island, bringing the 1977 Losties back to 2007? Could this have something to do with the incident? Theory by MAC
