We know about the rabbit experiments. We also know about Changs obsession with keeping the rabbits seperated as to not lose one into the wrong time or soemthing like that.
This isnt a strong theory, obviously, but what if Richard was the one that was experimented on. Like, he was or is about to become the first human (as far as dharma knows) to time travel. What if he was sent back to the short past and met up with himself. Then, they sent the one who he met up with back even further( possibly by mistake).
Following?
Now We have a one Richard existing in the past who does not have the knowledge of him being the first time traveler or being experimented on because he hasnt experienced it yet, and another Richard now living through events that he has already experienced, effectively taking the place of the Richard who was SUPPOSED to be in that timeline.
This could explain his different appearances, and make sense of the times where Richard knows things, and when he doesn't.
I know its a stretch because we havent really seen anything that would lead us to believe that Richard would cooperate with Dharma, or that Dharma would be able to capture him and time travel experiment on him.
I think this may make me think that he was involved in some sort of accident at some point (signs not pointing to him being involved in "the incident" but who knows.
Or....none of this is true at all which has a bigger chance of being true. But hey, speculation is fun, right? Theory by AbsoluteTruth
