In Dead Is Dead we see Ben And Young Ethan take Alex from Danielle in 1988 or 1989. We have to assume "the purge" has not happened yet as the Others live in the jungle. We do not know yet why Ethan has joined the Others and what has happened to his mother-Amy. I am going to make an assumption that Amy has died and Horace may have become as repulsive to Ethan as Roger had become to Ben. Ethan may have left and joined the Others or become an operative inside Dharma like Ben.
Later in the episode we find out that Charles was removed from the island because he has made many trips off island and fathered a child.
We know that this child is Penny. If we are to assume Charles left the island by submarine after "the purge" and had Penny. Penny would be younger than Alex. So we know Charles has been leaving the island prior to "the purge." How he has been leaving and for how long is unknown.
We can assume from this episode that "the purge" happened in 1992 and was probably ordered by Charles. Charles has been banished for at least twelve years.
The Others are like Hermit Crabs moving from place to place. In 1954 the Others killed the military taking the equipment and making it there own. When we first see Elle and Charles they are wearing military uniforms.
After "the purge" the Others take over Otherton and make it their own.
Other assumptions:
1) Dharma built the barracks over some kind of Egyptian ruins
Horace's house(later Ben's house) is built over the entrance and was built there on purpose.
2) The phrase "What lies in the shadow fo the statue?"
is a reference to the Orchid station or donkey wheel.
The Losties were in it's shadow when the flash
happened and we saw the statue for the first time.
3) Ilia is working for Widmore or third unknown party.
I believe Charles has been working with the Dharma Initiative
for many years and this is how he gained access to getting off the island. He may have been instrumental to setting up the truce
and that is why the Dharma Initiative was not killed like the military
in 1954.
I do not believe Charles amassed his fortune in the twelve years following "the purge".
I also believe Alex and Danielle's deaths were a matter of course
correction.
