As we watch the time travel episodes unfold, what strikes me is that Richard appears the victim of his own (or Jacob’s?) bad choices. Think back to Jughead – who is in charge? Widmore sure is vocal when it comes to dealing with the left behinders and killing mercilessly. By the 1970s and 1980s Widmore and young Hawking are the ones Richard needs to ‘check with” when he saves Ben? My guess is that Widmore was likely the one that convinced Richard to let Dharma in in the first place and then allowed Dharma practically to take over the island. Let’s face it, Widmore sure liked the ability to come and go – fathering a child and building an empire.
Horace – another big con, as it appears he was part of the cover story and the truce which then afforded Dharma the run of the island with stations, people, construction, automobiles, submarines – on and on. Maybe Dharma helped with Jughead, but Richard stood idly by – allowing a sonic fence to be built and letting Dharma grow into a community. Why?
Next is Ben. If there was ever a brilliant con man it is Ben Linus. We know everything he has done he has done with Richard right there beside him gullible as ever in accepting Ben’s lies about Jacob, the island (likely about Widmore) and so many more examples. The whole “pregnancy” thing was another fool’s purpose that Richard agreed to.
Richard even gets conned by Sawyer in 1974 – falling prey to Sawyer’s ability to speak to him about Locke. And now it is Locke’s turn, come on, Richard, think for yourself. It was Locke in 1954 that planted the seed in your mind that he was special – a fact you could not confirm when you visited him as a child. What do your Others think of you and your bad choices? Be your own leader, Richard don’t be conned by everyone that has their own selfish reason for wanting to control the island.
Some may think Richard is a genius with unlimited powers, including time travel, spatial transportation, omniscient capabilities that defy rational explanation and anything else you can think he should have. For me, I don’t see it.
I am hopeful this can be explained, but if it is I expect a very good explanation. Theory by AndLost
