I originally posted this in the forums thinking it was only going to be a single point, but it has grown. And I apologize if this has already been said here.
I like the "Perceptions theroy" but I have a twist on it. I don't like thinking some of the anomalies we have seen are just continuity errors. Especially when the scene zooms right onto it (Ben's gunshot wound, the picture frames, etc.).
My theory is, and hopefully I can explain this well enough, that what we are seeing are different "times/dimensions" of these events occurring. It's hard to explain, but I believe there could be multiple times/dimensions, but "what happened, happened" and even though they are different time frames the same sequence of events always occurs (It's The Matrix, although in that world it was a computer program running over and over). So this explains why we would see Ben's wound in so many different spots, yet they would all have the same outcome...Ben gets taken to the Others.
It has been said that Desmond is "special" and he has the ability to change things. This is why when Desmond purchased the ring for Penny, Ellie said that he wasn't suppose to do that (or something like that). It wasn't completed in the same sequence as previously. Ellie knew this because she is aware of these time loops.
And if I wanted to take it one step further...it could be possible that "major" things in the different loops change from loop to loop. Maybe little Ben WAS shot in the heart and did in fact die...in that reality loop.
And with Desmond, he wasn't actually seeing the future, he was seeing a different loop of the situations. So because he seen this he could determine what he had to do to change it in his loop...not because it was "the future" it's because it happened before in a different loop. And a very good telling of this, is that Desmond also saw in his final flash Claire getting aboard the helicopter with Aaron...although that didn't happen! BUT it did happen in the loop that Desmond saw.
I'm probably totally out to lunch, but I just can't face the fact that they would move a bullet hole from the exact location of Ben's heart (anyone who has taken first aid knows it's slightly up and to the right of that little rib notch), and move it to his lower right abdomen, and then to his left side (where the gauze was under the dressing).
This helps me sleep at night, and hopefully it isn't too much "out there". :S Comments adding or dismissing the theory are more than welcome. Theory by Critter3
