Explanation Of Paradoxes
Ok first of, a question that we all have been thinking to ourselves throughout this entire season is, what if the Losties somehow change time? Well to invoke a bit of controversy I think they already have. Allow me to elaborate.
Daniel Faraday has claimed that “What Ever Happened, Happened” suggesting that nothing could be done to change the past or alter the future and that everything, however obscure that the Losties are experiencing in the past, has already happened. However, Daniel also contradicts himself. During “The Beginning of the End”, Daniel speaks to Desmond and informs him that he is special and he can change the future, but surely by Daniel saying this to Desmond, Faraday himself is altering the timeline? Wouldn’t Desmond already recognise Faraday anyway from this encounter, instead of just remembering it as he said to Penny? I think this statement is variable, perhaps by the term “what ever happened, happened” means that whatever you do will happen, and when you return to your proper timeline it will have altered to accommodate what you have done. Obviously there are perhaps certain things that must not be altered in order to keep the universal balance that Ms Hawking r! efers to back in “Flashes Before Your Eyes”. So from this we can deduce that if you try and prevent certain things from happening, there will be a correction, perhaps a time cop like Ms Hawking will stop you, or numerous other scenarios will develop to stop you accomplishing it, to quote Dr Chang when the construction worker said “What so we’re going to go back and kill Hitler”? “ There are rules”. However I think the island can be exempt from some of these rules, in terms of altering the past. Desmond couldn’t save Charlie, because that was the future, and the future cannot be altered, unless done so in the past.
Below I will list what I think the Losties will or have changed.
1. Star Wars Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back: I think that what Vozzek69 said about Hurley trying to see if he can change the past by rewriting Star Wars has nailed it right on the head. If Hurley was to send his version to George Lucas, would it mean that it was Hurley all along who wrote Star Wars? No it means that he has gone back in time before Lucas had a chance to come up with it and altered it so he could make it better. This means that perhaps the timeline would alter slightly and it would forever be Hurley’s version of the Empire Strikes Back that would exist.
2. The Incident: I believe that this version of the incident will be due to something the Losties have done. The incident would be exactly the same, loss of electromagnetic containment, but the cause or catalyst would be different. Due to Sawyer, Juliet and Kate saving Ben, suspicion has been aroused and will no doubt lead to there being more than just one fugitive. With Faraday returning to the island I think he will eventually explain to Dr Chang about who everyone really is, by using equations that Chang can understand. This will lead us to the video tape from comic con, Chang believes them, but Radzinsky and Horace do not. Anyway, because of the chase round the island on the hunt for the fugitive Losties, a group of the hostiles (perhaps led by Erik) will get pissed and follow the action to where the Losties attempt to hide (The Swan Station). This will lead to a firefight where Radzinsky and his minions in the black jumpsuits gun down the hostiles to prevent the truce! being broken, and also the knowledge of the Swan, in the crossfire a stray grenade thrown by someone breeches the containment on the incident room (that we saw in Via Domus, and is considered Canon by the writers). Chang, Faraday and Radzinsky fight to prevent disaster, in the process Chang loses his arm, (which would be cool if it was due to his wedding ring pulling his hand into the electromagnet) and it’s Jack who amputates it and saves his life. Eventually Faraday and Chang come up with the computer system, because by turning the failsafe key would be dangerously unpredictable for at least 25 years.
3. The Purge: Its apparent that the message Chang delivered to the future got through, who else could Ilana and Bram be? First of all they would have captured or killed Ben before he got away on the outrigger if they were working for Widmore. And If they were working for Ben, why did they not just go with him to the island? Because they are the reconstituted Dharma members, perhaps relatives of people who died in the purge. They are going back to finish of the work that Dharma started, and try and find a way to alter the past so the purge didn’t happen, all because of the message the Losties and Chang decided to send to the future. Bram and Ilana aren’t alone they will probably send for reinforcements and other scientists. The line “What lies in the shadow of the statue”? gives It away, just another riddle or joke similar to “What did one snowman say to the other”? This suggests that at least one of the founders of Dharma is still alive, perhaps Gerald or Karen D! egroot, or an interesting twist, Daniel Faraday. Anyway the goal of Bram and Ilana is to understand the Orchid, prevent the purge, and eliminate the hostiles.
