I'm sure this ideas been thrown around, but here's my idea of what Jacob is and how he arrives at the island. I believe he captained the Black Rock, here are some reasons why:
- When we see him, he appears to be in mid-18th century garb. (Cabin Fever).
- He has a distaste for "technology", according to Ben. I find that a strange choice of words, because that lantern that they used to enter the cabin IS technology...it's just technology used PRIOR to the mid 18th century.
The second portion of this theory deals with the FDW itself. I believe it was put in place by Jacob and crew, and here are my points supporting this:
- If you look at the FDW chamber, we notice a few things... There is a lantern hanging up. I find this strange. A lantern is too advanced, I feel, for the “ancients” that lived on the island (hieroglyphs and ruins people). It’s also not advanced enough for Dharma… It must have been put there by the crew.
- The wheel itself is an actual Donkey Wheel… used to tie off pack animals and have them walk in circles to grind meal or pump water (something like that anyway, haha). Seems like a bit of nineteenth century tech doesn’t it?
Keeping this brief, here’s my timeline of events…
The Black Rock crashes onto the island (who knows how, tidal wave? EM pulse? Doesn’t really matter for the sake of this theory). There are slaves on board, but they also have dynamite. I think that they were actually a mining ship using Dynamite to blast for Coal… that explains the name of the ship being the “Black Rock”. The slaves were on board to assist in this process.
They land, they begin doing what they had originally set out to do… blow stuff up and look for coal. They enter the area under what we currently know as the Orchid and find the cave. They set up the dynamite and BOOM, EM energy rocks the island, similar to what happened to Desmond. While Desmond was able to contain the strength of the EM blast with the failsafe key, Jacob was not so lucky. His atoms scatter and, rather than his consciousness being “unstuck in time”, his being is ripped out of time.
The remaining crew is terrified, their captain has just been incinerated. With some help, possibly from Richard who has already been on the island for 100s of years at that point, they rig up a lid of rock to cover the hole they blasted into the pocket of EM energy. It covers it’s release, and they rig up a donkey wheel/pulley system in order to lift the lid if needed (again, maybe Richard’s idea in order to keep the island safe by moving it?).
I’m still trying to figure out why Jacob does what he does… is it possible he’s looking for his constant? Is that what his request for help to John was?
Thanks for hearing my rambles, let me know what you think.
