Since season 2," We're the good guys Michael," has been one of my favorite lines in the show. My belief is that, while Ben does bad things, he thinks what he's doing is right.
Just like Christian is guiding Locke, someone has been guiding Ben. This person, or being, has been forcing him to do bad things.
Not like mind control force, and it is free will, but the island seems pretty convincing to whoever wants to listen.
Ben loves this Annie girl. Ben gets Annie girl pregnant. Ben then exiles Widmore from the island (did Charles shack up with Annie or was it a simple love/hate relationship), seemingly taking control when he shouldn't have. As a result, the island is upset at Ben and Annie becomes the first victim of death by pregnancy. Since then, all Ben's been trying to do is figure out a reason why. Well, it's all his fault.
