In season 2 when we find out that "Henry Gale" was actually an Other, he told Locke he had come for him, to bring him to his people.
Why?
I beleive that question was answered in 5x01 (Because You Left). We see Ethan confront Locke at the sight of the Beechcraft crash site. Locke tells Ethan his full name, tells him he knows his leader is Ben Linus and he is from the future. He tells Ethan that Ben appointed John the leader of the Others in the future and then promptly vanishes before his eyes. We know that around this time (approx. 2001) Ben was in charge. He has Juliet brought to the Island around that time.
I think we can safely assume that after Locke disappeared right in front of Ethan's eyes, he went and told Ben what just happened to him. A man named John Locke appeared to him, told him he knew who Ben was, claimed he was from the future where Ben had jsut appointed him as the new leader of his people. There isnt a doubt in my mind that Ben was probably disturbed by this, and when Ethan reported back from the crash site that the vanishing man from 3 years previously was there, Ben knew his reign was over. So I believe he went to extract Locke from the beach camp and bring him to the Others to prepare him for the passing of the torch, as it were.
So that's why Ben was coming to take Locke away in Season 2. T fulfill his destiny.
