Little Ben isn't dead. Wait- well, technically he is.
With Sayid's shot, Ben has died as a loyal believer, and fighter for the island and will be resurrected as Locke has, and will be able to be an immortal from this young age on.
But Richard or Jacob- (who i'm betting is Faraday because he would see the need to course correct an error in time of Sayid going to the past and killing young Ben), have to make sure that whatever happens stays happened in the future and will have to resurrect him.
How?
Well the Magic Box of course. all a metaphor for a coffin. i.e. after death this box will let you get the chance to live forever as a part of the island- with immortality, and incapable of disease.
Let's be real- Richard's done it, Locke too, Christian Shepard(don't know his past yet, but he's been there before most def), and now we see how Ben got such a leg up on power at a young age.
This also explains the look of shock when Ben got the news that he had a tumor on his spine. How does a dead/(resurrected) person get cancer? (Must mean the island doesn't believe he's loyal anymore and his immortality is wearing off..?)
All of this is taking place, by whatever rituals are going on in the Temple. We already know that there's something weird with how bodies are buried on the island- because of the mystery of what exactly Richard wanted those bodies for in Laflaur. Anyways, I believe Richard has gone through, what Locke has gone through, and now we see how Ben also became one of the others. This is also the reason why Others are so nonchalant about being killed, as they reach a higher status in their groups when they die for the island.(remember bea klugh? yea she knew she'd be just fine with being dead) The deaths of many characters might also lead to an explanation of the whispers. The spirits from the people who didn't die FOR the island could still be wandering around, as only spirits of people who have died for the island get to be resurrected. Their wills judged by smokey from the temple decree whether or not resurrection takes place. Theory by Dan
