I just read a theory by gabriel87120 (Jacob & Richard connected) which concerns Jacob & technology. I found it an interesting read. I have different ideas which I hope you may also find interesting.
A year and a half ago I put this theory on the now defunct Lost theories called ‘Flashlight Jacob’ but it didn’t really get any interest whatsoever, so I have written it again in the hope someone might like it.
The only 'fact' we have that Jacob does not like technology is when Ben told Locke this at the cabin door. Other than that we have no other references that I am aware of, and Ben can hardly be said to be telling the truth most of the time either!
So I asked myself, is it a SPECIFIC technology thing or a GENERAL technology thing. If Ben is telling the truth then there is a mystery to be solved regards Jacob's hatred of technology.
But if Ben is lying then I asked myself what was his motive i.e. what was it that he was trying to prevent?
The object in question at that particular moment is of course the flashlight.
So one could say Ben did not want Locke to use the flashlight.
What could it be about the flashlight I asked myself? Then an idea hit me...a flashlight has one purpose only....to shine light, and what is light but an electromagnetic wave.
So another way of putting this, and especially in this show, is to say that shining light is the same as saying 'to emit electromagnetic energy'
So is it a coincidence that when Locke emitted electromagnetic energy in Jacob's direction, that all sorts of stuff started to happen?
Almost as if the light i.e. the electromagnetic energy somehow ‘energised’ Jacob.
Could the ‘Jacob hates technology’ line be just another manipulation of Ben?
Could it be that the only reason he said that was to scare Locke into not taking or using that flashlight?
That his plan was to go in there with Locke, talk to what would look like an empty chair, have Locke believe he was the man behind the curtain then leave, and of course it was all going that way until Locke heard the voice, and then turned the flashlight on, at which point Jacob seemed to gain some power back.
A smaller point about technology is that even the match used to light the lantern outside the door is technology. The lantern itself is technology. Making & chipping stone tools although primitive to us is still nonetheless technology.
So what technology is it that he hates and why?
I don’t believe Jacob hates technology at all. I believe if that flashlight was anything to go by, then technology will be what can save him.Theory by Steve T.O'G.
