I've been thinking about the FDW and how it was intended to be used. One thing that really sticks out is the fact that through the skipping
Richard, Ethan, Widmore and Ellie we know don't skip. We assume that the rest of the others don't skip as well, however we don't much about them. So my theories are:
1) You have to have been born on the island to use the FDW correctly. This could be a reason why Ben turned it first, if Locke would have turned it the others would have known that Ben wasn't born on the Island because he was skipping.
2) Because you are immune to the skipping, when someone like Richard uses the wheel he can turn it accurately and leave it in the correct spot to give an intended result. Instead of flashing mid-turn, this could explain why the wheel seemed like it was off when Ben turned it.
I think it was really weird that they had shown Ethan with Locke by the plane and I think this could be the meaning of that scene. Well those are my quick thoughts that I had, what do you think? Theory by JG
