So here is my truly first post on this forum. I am not a great writer, and this post will not be very elaborate.
Time in lost is like a plane flying with a smoke trail.
At some point the plane makes a loop (caused by moving donkey wheel) and when it returns back to level flight - if it returns EXACTLY to it's original path, nothing will change (that would be similar to our characters "playing their roles" and not changing anything).
However, it is almost impossible for a plane to return exactly to the same, original path - it will always end up slightly to the left or right, below or above.
The same happens with our characters and many people prior to them - when due to various reasons donkey wheel is moved and the time jumps, they (willingly or not) change things in this new past.
It is a separate path, that is parallel to the previous one.
It doesn't matter that on the same, "new path" Sayid killed young Ben. Ben in 2007 will still exist because he "jumped" to this new loop from the previous loop. However the reality of this new path is different, because many things happened differently (Ben was dead and possibly there was no Purge).
That is why so many coincidental things happened on the show - the loop took place many times before, and every time some group tries to change the new reality to its benefit.
I hope I didn't make it too complicated, once you visualize a plane making a loop after loop, but consistently shifting a little to the left I hope you will get the idea. The loops can be bigger or smaller, happen earlier or later - all depends on when the donkey wheel was moved in the particular timeline.
