I was thinking back to the season 3 episode where Ben told Locke to imagine a box where whatever you wanted would be in it. It was just a metaphor and there is no Dharma Box Station. But the idea that the island can give you what you most desired is interesting. If you want to be brave, you will have opportunities to be brave. If you want to be a leader, you will have the chance to lead, etc.
So what has Jack Sheppard always wanted more than anything? The respect of his father, Christian. He has dedicated his life to fixing things and being a hardcore spinal surgeon but these are just means to an end. He ignored his wife, tattled on his father's drinking, and became obsessed with both Sarah and Kate when they rejected him. If he could have one thing on the island, it would be a chance to show his father that he "has it".
So Jack will use his new-found faith to follow Christian's instructions to return to the island, find him, and save his friends. The problem is that Christian doesn't seem too concerned about any of Jack's friends. He leads Michael to his death, he won't help Locke up when his leg was broken (probably to make him feel more depressed/suicidal), and somehow made Claire give up Aaron.
It could be possible that Christian is doing this for their own good. Michael's path was that he had to die so he might as well save some lives before he dies. He couldn't touch Locke because that might cause a space-time continuum disruption like if the two #15 bunnies had touched each other. And maybe Claire had to give Aaron up because the island was not a safe place to be at right now with mercenaries and frozen donkey wheel turnings. Christian also lead Jack to the caves with water in season 1.
So maybe Jack's box brought Christian to life enough so he could help Jack's friends and family. If so, I wonder what Locke's box brought him. I don't think it was his father because Ben used Locke's father to discredit him as a capable leader. I think Locke brought a chance for him to walk again and to make some friends. He wanted supplies for the survivors and poof he finds the hatch. Whenever Locke lost faith, his paralysis came back. His communion with the box can be changed according to his desire.
So what's Ben's box? Power, a hot blonde lady friend, eternal life? Probably all of the above. But the box seems to only give those things that would others and not just the person in the box. A truly unselfish desire will be granted, healing, direction, friendship, supplies.
Desmond's box is his desire to change his past. So poof, he can travel to his conscious past and slightly change his history to benefit his future.
I'm sure there are boxes for every character on the show but only these few seem to be supernatural and important. Theory by LostButNotForgotten
