Now from reading all of your theories, I had a theory on what the "Incident" was... I realized that yes, polar bears were used by DI to move or turn the frozen donkey wheel. And they were successful moving the Island... Maybe this is the "incident" that Dr. Marvin Kandel talks about.
We know, or can assume that only the chosen, "special" people can move the island. We know this from Christian telling Locke that he, specifically were to move the island, not Ben. So would Polar Bears be chosen by the Island to Move it? I don't think so.
After Ben moves the Island, it is skipping like a record. Perhaps when the Polar Bear/s moved the Island, it did the same thing. The Island started to flash and skip thru time and eventually, Widmore had to set it right by turning the wheel himself... or maybe Christian. (I don't know if the timeline fits or not) This "incident" caused a mixing of time chaos that changed the course of the future time. The players like Ben, Widmore, Richard, Christian, all know this is the keypoint in time they need to set right. Maybe some wants to change the outcome of this "incident", or "war", and others wanting to keep the status quo. This could of led to breaking the truce between the hostiles and DI? Maybe how Annie died from Ben's past? Many possibilities with this show.... Theory by sicman1179
