As we get closer to the end I think it's becoming ever more important to consider what it is the ultimate purpose of each character is. To do that you have to take a look at their character arc thus far and sort of plot out the end.
Let's start with: Pierre Chang sends a message to the future beginning for the reconstitution of Dharma.
I'll submit that Sun's purpose as this newly powerful woman is to use her power and wealth to fund this modern Dharma. She is in the present already, and why is that? She's there to bring the other losties back. Why would she do that? Because she's motivated to get Jin out of 1977 making Jin's purpose to be the lure to drag the rest of them back with him. Jack's purpose in the past is to learn first hand what Dharma is all about so that he can lead it in the future. Jack was always meant to lead, but he had to be broken down in order to accept fate long enough to get to the past. Once brought back he will lead the new Dharma along with his chief of security Sawyer. Meanwhile Frank was meant to fly the others to their proper destination and Ben who came along with him is meant to reclaim his leadership over the others.
Where am I going with this? Here goes,,,
The Hostiles have been the native protectors of the island for centuries, but the Island brought Dharma to it in order to correct a major problem the others couldn't have handled. It chose Ben to supercede Richard for a time in order to use Ben as a channel to communicate with Dharma, who as scientists wouldn't outright accept the island's orders. But Ben, who longed for somebody to love him, grew selfish imprissoned Jacob and the Island, cutting them off from Richard, and used Richard's suspicion of Dharma to con him into purging them.
Meanwhile Widmore, who been kicked out for stading against him, knows unlike Richard that Dharma was what was needed, and he works off island to get the losties to the island in order to get them back in time so that can learn about Dharma, return to the present and rebuild it.
Locke was the key to converting Jack esspecially, but Ben has stolen him away, and Locke and Ben are going to return to lead the others in the present. Ben, withholding the information that he imprisoned Jacob, and neither he, Richard, or Locke understanding that Dharma has to fix the "problem" will be set to fight them upon their return. The War.
So Jack and co. will come back, reconsitute Dharma, fight against Locke/Ben and the hostiles, and fix the "problem". But what in the hell is the "problem" you say?
