Ok, so I know there's a big debate going on with regards to the 1977 Losties being able to make an adverse effect on the future of what we currently know.
I have a feeling that the future CAN be effected/altered at ANY time by the 1977 Losties - which poses HUGE problems for the future. The future DOES need to be changed, but not yet.........
This means their job of being back in 1977 is to keep the timeline on the correct course. An example of this is in the episode 'LaFleur'. When the time jumps stop - The Losties hear screams in the distance, they follow the screams and find 2 Others, a dead guy (Paul) and a woman (Amy) who is also about to be executed (As per Lostpedia). Now, Saywer and Juliet prevent Amy being killed - saving her life, which in turn results in her hooking up with Horace, getting preggers and giving birth to Ethan.
In saving Amy's life, Sawyer and Juliet have unknowingly kept the the timeline (as we know it) on the correct course. Had they not saved Amy's life then she would never have given birth to Ethan who would never have been able to infiltrate the 815 survivors in Season 1.
I think it is obvious that they need to change the future, but I think the crucial part is WHEN they need to change it.
In time I think the 1977 Losties will begin to realise that their job is to keep everything as it should by using the knowledge they have retained from their crash in 2004. There job at the moment is to make sure 'What ever happened, does actually happen' - which will result in a few things, one of which being Faraday having to tell a young Charlotte never to return to the Island, as he knows this needs to happen to bring her back to the Island in the future. She will have a bigger part to play other than just dying - but we are yet to see her purpose - Daniel will realise she needs to return, and the best way of getting her to return is to tell her (when she's young) never to return. He knows this will bring her back as she told him this was the reason she returned just before she died.
Now, if the Losties were to ensure EVERYTHING stayed the same then what would be the point? 2004 would come, 815 would crash, there would be a struggle for leadership amoungst the survivors, Widmore's frieghter would find the Island, the O6 would be rescued, Ben and Locke would turn the FDW and the time loop would start all over again.
This means the 1977 Losties need to change something in the past which will help them change the timeline after they crash in 2004. (God I hope this makes sense)
What is it they NEED to change? I have no idea - but I have an idea on what they do change..........the 'purge'. This would explain why the barracks were never taken over by the hostiles as shown in 'Namaste'. Again, I have no idea what knock on effects this would have for the future but I guess only time will tell. We will again see 815 crash but this time things will be slightly different - hopefully whatever the 1977 Losties change will help them in 2004 to reach their final goal.
Their final goal? I think the main job of our Losties is to save the end of the world. The Losties are stuck in a time loop on the island with the real world continuing to plod along as normal. As the real world plods along it is becoming ever closer to ending and time is running out to save it. Ben and Widmore who know the future are now getting desperate to stop it, and although they cannot change anything themselves they can sure as hell try and help those who can. Sometime in the future the world will end, and the key to saving the world is on that island.
On a side note - something that bugs me is the thought that If 1977 Sawyer were to get on the sub and return to the real world, would he be able to see the real world as it was in 1977? The answer is no, he has no 'constant' in 1977 - upon leaving the Island I think he would experience the nose bleeds etc and end up dying before he reached the mainland.
Obviously this thoery is basic - Lost is a lot more complex than the above and it leaves a lot of unanswered questions i.e. Smokey, 4 toed statue etc, black rock etc. But hopefully it gives people ideas to expand their own thoughts and possibly come up with more definative answers.
Anyway, I hope it was an enjoyable read if anything else. Thanks for your time guys.Theory by Rawlesy
