Ben is Jacob. At first I thought this would be the ultimate irony…almost a joke. But then I got to thinking about it and finally came to the conclusion that this idea is not anymore far fetched than other theories about who Jacob is. And while I do try to keep up with all the theories flying around I may have already missed this one. This is my first theory and I’m a bit nervous about posting it, but here it is anyway.
This is what I think might have happened. As a boy Ben has a vision of his mother and develops a relationship with Richard. I have always assumed this made him “special” or he was already “special”. At some point in Ben’s life he came to a fork in the road. He had a hard choice to make and in the Island’s eyes he makes the wrong choice. So the Island captures his “soul”, “higher power”, or perhaps a part of Ben that becomes trapped in time and space. When Ben needs guidance or maybe information he goes to Jacob for help. Maybe Darlton chose to call this “entity” Jacob because in the Bible, Jacob is the father of Benjamin. At least Jacob acts as a father figure or guide to Ben.
For some reason I don’t know yet, Jacob’s meeting place with Ben is in the cabin and Ben surrounds the cabin with ash. Somehow the ash and Jacob’s dislike of technology are connected…..perhaps because of the incident. The ash either helps keep Jacob in or protects Jacob is some way.
Special people like Locke (who will later be resurrected) can also communicate with Jacob. Somehow Ben and Locke are deeply connected. We see this time and time again.
Maybe when Jacob pleads with John to “help me” he wants Locke to get Ben on the right track. Ben shoots Locke because he was “supposed to” or he doesn’t want anyone else corrupting his relationship with Jacob. He says something like “you heard him?”. Maybe Ben doesn’t want anyone to “know” that part of him. Or, just thought of this, Jacob is Ben’s dark side that he has imprisoned while he tries to set things straight. At any rate, if Locke can communicate with Jacob he could really screw things up for Ben.
Because when the Island took “Jacob” from Ben, Ben couldn’t get that part of himself back until he did whatever it was the Island wanted. That’s why Ben is so motivated to do what he does. He wants to set it all right so he can get himself back or maybe get rid of “evil Jacob” once and for all. And John Locke is part of that and so are the 06. Maybe once Ben gets it right he reunites with Jacob (reconciles with his “father”) the Island and maybe the world are “saved”.
I think that Jacob’s imprisonment in the cabin is at least somehow connected to the incident.
What about Christian and maybe Claire? Christian could be like Locke and was resurrected on the Island. He has a special understanding of the Island and what needs to happen. Claire I’m not so sure of. Maybe she’s just with Daddy until the problem is resolved and Aaron can be brought back to the Island. At any rate, they are both comfortable in the cabin. It is a magical place where spirits materialize, wisdom is bestowed and can seemingly move about. Feedback is welcome. Theory by Casey
