I've been inspired to post my own as a continuation of the theory "Fake plane?" by kiddo.
Lets say that kiddo is right - that neither Charles Widmore, nor Ben
planted the plane. Then who did? My theory is that Jack and a female companion did it.
The crash of oceanic 815 brought major instability to the island. I believe that season 5, and probably early season six, will lead us to the understanding that all of the bad things that happened on the island (the purge, countless deaths, the foreshadowed war, etc) all come about because the people of oceanic 815 entered the loop - the loop that they caused. The only way to stop all of what happened, and end the loop once and for all, is to remove the oceanic six from the game.
At the end of this season Daniel Faraday will no doubt put his knowledge of time travel to use (surely he was introduced to do more than whisper and bumble his time travelling theories to people) and help the oceanic six (or at least the surviving memembers) back to their 'correct' time.
If Daniel dies before the end of the show, he will have passed on his knowlege of how to manipulate time to the other members of the losties. They will uses this information, and the knowledge that you can create a new street, and they will seperate and do three things:
1. Off the island somebody, probably Sayid, will go and kill the original pilot of oceanic 815 - the one who, as we will find out, was in league with Dharma (which is why smokey killed him - smokey was angry that he started the loop) - in an attempt to stop the plane from going anwhere near the island. This will mean a new pilot will fly the plane. The plane will still lose radio contact and the new pilot will again change course and begin flying toward where the island was.
2. Doubting that the can change things (because of Faraday saying whatever happened happened, and Hawking saying that the universe has a way of course correcting) On the island one of them (I'm guessing Jack with a female companion) will stay to turn the wheel. He will travel to the orchid.
3. We'll return to Desmond, running back to the hatch and struggling to enter the numbers in time. The affect will be the same; electo-magnatism will cause the plane to be drawn to crashing on the island, only this time Jack will turn the wheel, thus moving the island and causing the plane to crash into the water.
The result in Jack turning the wheel will be that the island once again becomes unfixed in time, and starts to jump around violently. He and the woman he's with will accept their fate, and the fatal symptoms of being on the island for so long, return to the caves and die. Becoming Adam and Eve.
With the oceanic people not going to the island, and not going back to Dharma time, they never get to meet Ben as a kid and tell him that he'll be a leader. Ben never causes the purge, and eventually Dharma will either run out of money and leave, or truely learn to live in peace with the hostiles.
The island, and the islands people, will find the peace they once had.
The clip of Faraday crying, when he saw the report of oceanic being found, was not from the timeline we've been following since the beginning of season one. It was him from the new timeline, and he was crying because some surpressed future/passed/alternate timeline memory slipped through for a moment. He was crying tears of joy, because he knew that although he lost friends, the love of his life was saved - Charolotte never died through the time skipping, because she never left.
Like I said, this is my first theory. Fell free to pull it to bits. I hope it's very wrong, because I love the show, and I love being surprised by it's constant twists. Theory by the third policeman
