1954 - Alpert meets Locke, gives him compass and tells him to visit him when he’s born.
1956 - Alpert visits Locke, realises there must be truth to the story
1961 - 5 year old Locke is visited by Alpert, Alpert tests him but Locke chooses knife
1974 - Alpert meets Sawyer, says he’s waiting for Locke
2004 - Locke crashes on island. Alpert tries to help him after he defects to the Others. Alpert welcomes Locke to the camp in S4 finale, when suddenly he disappears before his eyes when Ben turns the frozen donkey wheel.
Now Alpert lives on the island for four more years, I don’t know yet what he has been doing.
2008 - Alpert comes across Locke, resurrected and very much alive. Locke fills him in, I again don ‘t know what happens. I think however that at some point in time, they realise they are at a time when the survivors who were flashing through time are present in their timeline. Maybe they come across Rose & Bernard who indicate that they just flashed. Locke remembers the first flashes he was shot by Ethan and is at the beech craft .
Just to remind after the wheel was turned…
Locke jumps to 2001 and meets Ethan who shoots him. Then another flash takes him to what I believe to be around 2008 after future Locke has already returned to the island via Ajira 316. This is where our Locke who has been resurrected meets Alpert and tells him to go treat his past self for the gunshot and give him guidance; telling him he will have to die and give him the compass.
Remember, Alpert says to Locke when he asks how he knew he was shot and in the jungle that Locke told him himself….
Therefore, Locke has created his own destiny, by setting himself up through word of mouth to be a leader, when really the only evidence for this is from Locke himself. Alpert has been caught up in Locke’s meddling with the timeline.
I also have a feeling that when Locke tells Richard in 1954 that Jacob sent him, Jacob doesn’t exist yet - Alpert seems startled by the statement, but not necessarily in the know - maybe he wondered who Jacob was. What was more intriguing to Alpert was a disappearing man claiming to be their leader.
I believe that Jacob is Desmond who is trapped in a time bubble/paradox type (sorry about phrasing) thing after he eventually returns to the island in 2008. He is uniquely special (remember what Dan said) and I think that his return to the island changes him and it is up to this unique variable in the equation to fix things and restore order. Also, the only glimpse we have of Jacob doesn’t seem to far from Desmond - the hair is similar at least. I need to expand on this theory later. Leave your thoughts. Theory by RH
