First I want to give props to whoever wrote the theory about Desmond being the drunk scotsman who barrels into the room and messes everything up. I am now convinced that Desmond is the key to breaking the time loop which I believe the Losties are stuck in.
Now, I have long thought that Ben has seemed as though he's lived his experience on the Island over and over again. He has intimate knowledge of all of the losties, is totally callous as to what happens to others, and is very rarely surprised by anything. However, there are a few key instances where Ben has been surprised.
First: When Ben learns of Desmond's Boat
Second: When Ben learns Charlie is in the Pearl (Desmond is the only reason charlie survived long enough to be there)
Third: When Ben learns Hawking is Faraday's mother (Desmond tells him)
Now, in all three of these times Ben has been surprised, Desmond has been the cause!
There is one more time Ben was surprised: When Keamy kills Alex.
I think that Ben's cryptic comment to Widmore finally makes sense! He can't kill Widmore because they are stuck in a time loop. However, Alex has just died, which has never happened in the loop before.
Ben must realize that Desmond somehow changed the future and the result was Alex being killed rather than spared! Ben's comment to Widmore that "he broke the rules" doesn't mean he broke the rules by killing Alex; he broke the rules by bringing Desmond to the Island without telling Ben!!
How did he bring Desmond to the Island? Widmore and Hawking did it working together. Hawking prevented Desmond from buying the ring, and Widmore hosted the boat race which brought Desmond to the Island. Ben realizes that all of the things that are different this time around are a result of Desmond's interference, and thus blames Widmore for Alex's death BECAUSE Widmore brought Desmond to the Island.
This theory throws everything out of whack for me. It makes it seem like maybe Widmore and Hawking are the good guys, trying to rescue the Island from the time loop it is stuck by using Desmond. On the other hand, it makes it seem as though Ben actually wants the Island to continue its time looping forever! I don't know, but I think its interesting! Comments and constructive criticism appreciated, I don't mind if you poke holes in the theory but please don't be mean about it :) Theory by ivey_driveshaft
