What could Ben and Widmore fight a war over? The correct time line.
Ben and Widmore both know something about the future, and know how things are supposed to play out... maybe specifically or maybe vaguely. The War is over how the timeline should press forward.
One of them wants to see time move forward as usual, with predetermined events happening as they have always occured in the timeline. The other wants to alter that timeline and get a different outcome.
They both may have flashed forward to the future, much like Desmond's consciousness flashed around in the Constant, and they both know who is supposed to be present in the future, and what each person is supposed to do.
That's why Ben and Widmore care so much about the activities of the O6. They know that the O6 eventually will be back in the thick of things. That could also explain why Ben has been willing to shoot Locke and leave him for dead, or strangle Locke. He knows that, somehow, the Island will find a way to restore Locke to the timeline.
I believe that Locke will get to make a decision that will resolve the time issue... maybe he'll have an opportunity to free Jacob from imprisonment. Ben and Widmore want to influence that decision. Theory by Uncle Henry
