While watching the smoke monster this last time we saw him (with Danielle and her team at the temple), I couldn't help but notice that smokey acted differently than some of the other times we saw him. For one thing - he flat out growled which i never remember him doing before. The other time smokey acted simular to this was when he attempted to drag John Locke into a vent.
I started to realize that the smoke monster acts in three very distictive ways, and I think this may be because we are looking at three DIFFERNT smoke monsters. If you are a fan of the smokey = cerberus theory then you can say that we are looking at three seperate-but-attachable heads of smokey.
1) "Flashy" the monster: This is the one that comes up to you, flashes lights as if it is taking pictures of you. It shows you your past (and maybe future). It is simply there to collect data. To my memory Flashy is harmless, sending the others to do the dirty work if nessisary.
2) "Wispers" the monster: This is when we hear the backwards wispering, sometimes followed by an aparition type appearance. Wispers can take the form of others from your past, mostly taking the form of people who are dead. The wispers from the Island that have been played backwards usually reveal several people talking to each other, making me believe that wispers might actually be capable of capturing souls or at least reproducing exact memories of people it knows about.
3) "Killer" the monster: Stays in black smoke form, his primary purpose is to hunt down and kill. I believe any time we have seen the smoke moster actually kill someone we were watching Killer at work. To my knowledge this would be the Pilot and Echo, both of which were killed by actual Smoke, not by smokey in human form, and not by the same smokey that took snap shots (Flashy). I also believe this is the monster that attempted to take John Locke into a vent, and also the monster that sucessfully took Montand into a vent. If this is true then Killer may also have the ability to posses someone (what Danielle calls the sickness).
Please tell me what you think, I would also be interested in hearing any discrepancies (ie a time when "Flashy" did something that "Killer" should have done.) I know that echo sees his brother before he is killed by the smoke monster, however right before his brother disapears into the forest and we breifly see a puff of black smoke before "Killer" comes around and finishes him off. So I think the three heads of the monster do communicate with each other, and it is possible that we sometimes see 2, or even all three in the same scene or episode. Theory by Aelion
