When Locke travelled back in time to witness the drug plane crash, Ethan shows up and try’s to shoot him. However just before he can pull the trigger, miraculously Locke vanishes into thin air. Ok, now if we look at things from Ethan’s point of view, after Locke disappears I imagine him standing there in almost disbelief at what’s just happened. There’s no reason to think that Locke is special at this point and as far as Ethan is concerned Locke is just some old bald guy who vanished into thin air.
A few years after this incident Ben becomes the leader of the others and at some stage meets Ethan. Now I’m assuming Ethan might have perhaps told Ben about this vanishing incident, during their stay at the barracks for example. Ben would remember this unusual story
Now fast forward in time to the point where Oceanic flight 815 crash lands on the island. Ethan shows up at the crash site and pretends to be a survivor, during this time he compiles a list. Imagine his surprise when he sees an old bald guy walking around who not only looks identical, but also has the same name as the man that disappeared into thin air all those years back.
So a shocked Ethan would then report back to Ben, reminding him of the vanishing incident and that the same man is indeed now alive on the island. A slightly confused Ben would want to make sure it’s the same person, so he asks Ethan to follow him and confirm his I.D. This explains why Ethan was shadowing Locke in season 1 and made no attempt to kill him and also why Ben would risk his only surgeon.
Also the vanishing incident and the miraculous fact that Locke can now walk would confirm to Ben that Locke is indeed special, which explains why he then came for him in season 2.
OK a brief word on vanishing act number two, which this time happened in front of richard Alpert in 1954. After this occured , I imagine Alpert sitting in his tent gobsmacked and is the main reason I feel why he thinks Locke is special.Theory by Marcus
