I think the key to Lost can be found in the words of John Locke "Two sides, one is Light, one is Dark" spoken in the Pilot part 2. For what is worth I think Lost is a game, this is contest with rules and a defined outcome. The game is the future of mankind, the Island is the last hope for man and its use will determine the future of man. I'm getting fed up with the characters calling the Island “The Island” I think it could be Atlantis or The Garden of Eden.
The Island is a place of great power that can be used for good or evil. Anything is possible on the Island be that good or evil. The Losties, Others, Jacob, Monster and other characters are just pawns in this game. I'm not sure who the players of the game are and which characters represent light or dark but I'm confident that the battle is over an ideology of the way forward for the human race.
The show is like a Magician with a lot of misdirection. The introduction of time travel I feel will ultimately change nothing. The past cannot be changed if a character appeared in the past that simply means that character was there in that time zone at the time.
Finally I’m confident Locke did not encounter Smokey in Episode 4 Walkabout. I’m sure he came across a being with only 4 toes, which would tie in with the statue with 4 toes. If you look at the way the camera moves and the sounds the mystery being makes it does not feel like Smokey to me. Theory by Ticksize
