First of all, I've never posted a theory on here before and I appologize if someone else has already posted a theory along these same lines. Also, I will be the first to admit that there may be some holes here but I feel it's pretty sound in it's logic and reasoning. It's a bit long winded but do your best to follow.
Essentially, everything that has happened on the island is a direct (or indirect) result or a chain reaction of the events that the Losties set in motion during their time skips. From the Dharma Initiative to the Black Rock to the 4 toed statued, it's all a due to the actions of the Losties during thier time travels. So when we all saw them crash in season 1, all that crazy island stuff was already there. Confused? Me too.
Think of it this way. Relatively speaking, the Losties originally crashed on just a regular uninhabited island that may or may not have had "special" magnetic properties (it doesn't really matter at this point). Then, something (previously) along the way sent the island and the Losties skipping back through time. It could have been Farady's experiments or something else (but again, it's irrelevant at this juncture). While skipping through time the actions of the Losties either directly or indirectly led to the Black Rock crashing which led to Richard and his people inhabiting the island which led to people leaving the island which led to Hanso Foundation which led to the Dharma Initative which led to the hatch being created, which led to Desmond not entering the code which led to the plane crash and so on and so on and so on.
Now we have heard Ben and others talk about "rules" to time traveling. However, we shouldn't confuse "rules" with "unbreakable laws". As we all saw in Jughead, Faraday had a direct impact on the future when he told Elle to bury the bomb. And Locke did plenty (that we don't have to get into now) that had a direct influence on the future. My point being, it is certainly plausible to change the past or future but when you do you put yours and everyones whole existance at risk. For example, when the Dharma employee asks Dr. Chang, "so what do we do, go kill Hitler?" and Chang said "no there are rules" it's because killing Hitler would have had an enormous effect on the world. Without Hitler there would have been no WWII which means that many of our grandparents wouldn't have joined the military which means many of our grandparents would have never met which means many of us would have never been born. Does that make sense? So when Sawyer went to get supplies from the Desmond in ! the hatch it was very plausible that Desmond and Sawyer would meet but it was imperative that they not because if they had then the course of events on the island would have been drastically changed. Ben, Widmore, Abbadon, Richard etc. all know this and even though they want different things need to play by the same "rules" or risk being erased from the universe or sending things into a universal and catostrophic spiral. In layman's terms, it's basically a crapshoot as to what is going to happen when you change the past. When Locke threw the knife in the back of the soldier maybe he was suppose to die or just maybe he was just some nobody who's actions had no effect on the big picture. If by chance that knife would have been thrown in Widmore's back then it would have had catostrophic consequesnces. You just don't know what the consequences of your actions are going to ultimately be.
This leads us to the our current island crisis. When Widmore's men killed Alex he wasn't suppose to and "broke the rules" as Ben said. This had a chain reaction that ultimately lead to the 06ers getting off the island. Unfortunately, they weren't suppose to leave. The mysterious bullet hole in the gas tank of the chopper leads me to think that Ben never expected them to get far enough away from the island. And because of a comedy of errors, if you will, they ended up outside the radius when the island was moved. This ultimately changed the course of events that is suppose to or already did happen and now they need to get back quickly or risk a global catosrophic event. In 'The Lie', Mrs. Hawking said something about 70 hours and a window to get them back. I think we can safely assume that she figured out that the island and the left behinders will be making a stop in 2009 and they need to jump on and go along for the ride while the island is in town (so to speak) or everybod! y directly or indirectly linked to the island will be effected. And as we all know, in the world of Lost, everyone in the world is linked together somehow.
Finally, I originally didn't like the idea of Jack turning out to be Jacob but with this theory it makes ideal sence. Time traveling Jack, for one reson or another, had to stay in the past and now Richard, Ben, the others, etc. need to do everything he instructs them to do because he is the only one who knows what course of events need to take place. In the pilot episode, when Christian told Vincent to go wake Jack up because "he has work to do" he wasn't necessarily talking about helping the crashers in their time of crisis. He meant just go do your thing and stay alive because if you don't none of this would have ever happened.
I would appreciate any thoughts or feedback. Thanks for reading all the way through. Theory by Vedder
