The Danielle Rousseau we met in season one does not have to be the same woman who we saw introduce herself to Jin at the end of S05E04 "The Little Prince." That's what the writers want us to think, but it doesn't have to be that way.
On the french science expedition, there are two women. The second woman is a sun bleached blonde with dark roots who has not yet spoken, and so far as we know is not pregnant. As of The Little Prince we have yet to be formally introduced to her. The Danielle who introduced herself to Jin does not have a Yugoslavian accent - she's definitely french, and probably the Danielle Rousseau who left the message at the broadcast station. However, because she doesn't sound remotely Yugoslavian, she can't be the Rousseau we met in season one.
We have yet to hear the blonde speak. She was only in the background in The Little Prince. I predict when she does speak, she will have a Yugoslavian accent, and sound more like the Danielle Rousseau that we met in season one, even tho currently the pregnant woman looks more like the Danielle Rousseau we know. This is a sleight of hand on the part of the writers. Since so much time has transpired, either of these young actresses could be portraying the same character who was also portrayed by Mira Furlan as an older version.
There are many discrepancies between the story that season one's Danielle Rousseau gave our Losties, and the facts that have presented themselves. For example, she said she recorded the french broadcast message after the others were all dead, but the actual recording, in a voice other than season one Danielle, says that one of the crew is still alive but that "IT/HE" killed all the others. Season one Rousseau also said that The Others controlled the broadcast station, but by season three we learn it was just abandoned. There are other discrepancies, but this is already getting too long. This theory I'm proposing would explain why the discrepancies exist, and why the Danielle Rousseau of season one speaks french with a Yugoslavian accent - and why she's crazy.
What is going to happen is this: we will learn that the blonde (essentially a bottle blonde or sunbleached blonde whose hair will darken with time) is stressed and on the verge of crazy, and events on The Island take her over the edge. Perhaps she's in unrequited love with Robert, or there's some other intrigue among the french expedition team yet to be revealed, but it leaves the blonde woman jealous of her fellow expedition travelers and she kills them all, including the woman who introduced herself as Rousseau to Jin (the 'real' Danielle but NOT the Danielle we know from Season one). This faux Rousseau then takes the 'real' Danielle's baby. She wants to raise the child as her own, even telling The Others that she IS Danielle when she is not. Her identity is irrelevant to The Others, who happen upon the aftermath of her insane murdering rampage, and to protect the baby they steal it from her and scare her enough to keep her alone with her shame and cowardice and grief for ! sixteen years. When this faux Rousseau encounters the survivors of Oceanic 815, she tells them she is Danielle Rousseau because she's insane, and can't live with herself knowing what she's done. So even she believes her own lies now, and there's no one alive to prove her wrong.
This theory will only hold up until the bleach blonde opens her mouth. If she speaks in a Yugoslavian accent, I will feel vindicated. If she opens her mouth and sounds like a surfer dude from Miami, I will be very upset. Theory by ZachsMind
