I think we're going to find out that Ben is being played for a fool by the "others". We now know that Widmore was an other, and current speculation is that Eloise Hawking was an other around the same time period. That's assuming that Eloise is Ellie from 1952. I believe it is.
Now we've seen Christian (speaking for Jacob) tell John to meet with Eloise. So we are led to assume that she is still with the others group, and it's for the good of the island. Given her "they" reference from the 316 preview, she has taken over the Dharma station.
When Desmond went to Widmore to find Faraday's mother (Eloise), he knew exactly where she was. The Lamp Post. No longer a Dharma station, but taken over by the others. Knowing somebody's address is one thing, but given the fact that the address is an old Dharma station....there's a little more to that. I don't think Widmore is or ever was involved in Dharma. He's still an other. I don't think he would know where to find Eloise otherwise.
Obviously the others group is a little bigger than just those on island. We've seen Ben talk, and speak of others trying to organize the going back party. This global group includes Widmore and Eloise. Of couse, why would Widmore send off for a boat to capture one of his own? Because Ben lost his way. Ben was on the good side of the others, doing good work, but something happened that caused him to stray. Richard himself said that Ben was wasting the other's time with stupid stuff. So the global others group knew that Ben needed to be relieved of command we'll say. Of course, by the "rules", they can't kill one of their own. The only other option is to capture him, and take him off the island.
Widmore then organizes the search party with Abbaddon's help (another person with a possible link to the other's group). I'm thinking that Widmore was in charge of getting Ben off the island, because Ben wouldn't go willingly. Those outside probably knew that Ben was blocking communications to the outside world, which was probably a no-no. Even Richard looked surprised when Ben said he had lied about the Looking Glass station. So Widmore gets the searching party, Eloise finds the island, and off they go to get Ben.
Widmore is a smart man, as Keamey so eloquently put it. He knew that killing a member of the others was against the rules, so they can't kill Ben. The only way to remove him from power is to capture him, and take him off the island. That's why he sends Keamey and his group. Since they're not others, the rules of the others don't apply to him. He can kill anyone, including Alex. As long as Widmore didn't TELL him to kill her. Since Alex isn't really Ben's daughter, is she even really an other to fall within that rule? Who knows, but Ben obviously thinks that she should. Ben naturally gets upset and later finds Widmore. In the two's exchange, Widmore tells Ben he didn't kill that poor girl, "you did". He's stating that Ben created the situation that put her at risk. Had he done everything he was suppose to, and not strayed from his purpose, then Alex wouldn't have been in danger. Also, Ben states he can't kill Widmore, and that's because they're both others.
As we can see, Ben is still trying to help by getting the O6 together. Seems to me he still has a purpose off the island. That makes me think that Eloise and Widmore were both removed from the island at some point, as their new roles were off the island. I'm guessing that Widmore's removal had something to do with Ben's rise to power, which would explain the tension. Maybe their purpose off the island was to study the physics of the island. Obviously Eloise knows a thing or two, and passed it on to her son, and Widmore was sponsoring that research.
Though Widmore seems to be a pretty abrasive a-hole, he's also appeared to help Desmond to make sure that he ends up on the island. When we first meet Widmore, he seemed pleasant to Desmond until he asked to marry Penny. Later, in The Constant, he states "I'm not the one that hates you". I don't think that was only meant to imply Penny was mad at him, but to say that Widmore liked Desmond. However, he had to be steered away from Penny to get to the island. Had Widmore hated Desmond, do you think he would've let him get out of his office in Jughead? Naturally, it's Widmore's race that lands Desmond "lost" on the island. It all points to Widmore making sure Desmond gets on the island.
Ben for some reason became the leader of the others, but shouldn't have. He was never chosen. It just so happens he's really smart and very manipulating. He can be convincing at anything. We know Richard is gullible, since he believed Daniel and gang were from the US military. Maybe Ben worked his way into the group, mostly because he could see his mom in the jungle. So what, Hurley plays chess with Mr. Eko, but that doesn't mean he should be the leader. It might have taken a while, but I think they figured out Ben wasn't as special as they thought.
I think they're all part of the same group. Ben though desires to be more important, and will do what he can to further is own agenda. I think the Economist that he wanted killed was Widmore. Ben can't kill him, but a member of the O6 (not an other) can. Maybe Widmore confronted Sayid and let him in on some of the secrets. Secrets like maybe why Ben shouldn't be a part of their group. That's why Sayid doesn't trust Ben anymore. Widmore just about has to be good, because we all think he's bad. I mean this is LOST! I think Ben wants to be good, but something from the past scarred him too much. I think Ben really is a fraud as John claims, and Widmore knows it too.
I don't think we've really "met" the bad guys yet. I think that's Dharma, which we keep learning more about. Ben didn't know Eloise was Faraday's mother, and probably doesn't know Widmore is still involved. Obviously he doesn't know as much as he thinks. He's the odd man out, and he's getting played like a fiddle. I think some of this will be proven right or wrong this week. This ended up a lot longer than I had hoped. Plenty of holes in this theory for sure, and it may mean zip by Wednesday night.Theory by Macster
