OK, this is my 1st theory and I am open to constructive criticism.
It DOES contain information that was revealed in the S5 Premier.
Course Correction and Time (whether it be loops or travel) have been integral parts of LOST. It essentially boils down to the simple fact that you cannot change the past, nor can you change the future.
Lets say that there is 1 "string", but no more "strings" can be created, nor changed. Now, this "string" is infinitely long, but if something catastrophic happens, the "string" will be double back on itself, and end. This means that there is an end to the world, unless it can be corrected.
This is where the Island comes in. According to this "string" theory, certain events (births, deaths, etc.) MUST occur for the world to continue, just like Charlie drowning in the Hydra (even though he could have waited for the water to fill the room and then swim out the window Patchy blew up or just run out of the door before Desmond came).
This is where S5 comes in. There are many things that "have to happen":
1. Now, as we all know, the O6 "have" to go back to the Island ("we have to go back!") to save all the people that they left behind (Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Jin?).
2. Locke "has" to die "for" the Island (almost as if it's a ritualistic sacrifice)
3. Desmond "must" go find Daniel's mom, Ms. Hawkings, who is working currently with Ben Linus to get back to the island.
4. Ben "must" get "all" of the O6 in 70 hours, otherwise, "God help [them] all".
Now, all of those events MUST happen, because if they don't, the string will double back, creating a loop. Now, some characters, (Richard Alpert, Ms. Hawking, Abbadon, Daniel Faraday, Desmond [mabye Ben and Widmore?]) have been through multiple loops and have tried to change what happens so that the world may continue.
However, there are repercussions to this. If someone "changes the rules" or uses them for their benefit, then the "string" gets ruined again. Ben can now take revenge on Widmore through killing Penny, (because Widmore killed his daughter) and there may be unknown repercussions if Daniel uses his time traveling abilities to save Charlotte (from her chronic nosebleeds as revealed in season 5).
These certain characters know what MUST happen (Ben warns Jack not to contact freighter, Alpert tells Locke that he must "die for the Island", Abbadon tells Hurley that they have to go back) and try to fix what went wrong if they aren't able to convince them the first time (Ben helps Jack and the O6 get back). They know this because they have lived through these events multiple times! If they fail again, then the loop starts itself once more.
Now, in season 5, assuming that the O6 get back to the Island by
joining the DHARMA Initiative (yep I said it, if you think about it, it was the only way to get on the Island int the 1st place [Juliet, Ben's Dad, Ben himself]), they can both save Juliet, Sawyer, Jin (hey it's my theory) Daniel, Miles, Charlotte, Bernard, and Rose, WHILE fixing the horrible mistake that they have already made: leaving the island, thus, correcting the fate of the world. All of these things factor in to the "string" and therefore, the continuing existence of the world.
*******EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE*********
1. Desmond Hume
2. Daniel Faraday
If you think about it, the only characters to truly time travel have either been exposed to insane amounts of either radiation or electromagnetism. Therefore, they can "jump" around the string to either events that they have already lived through (Desmond in "Flashes Before Your Eyes" and "The Constant") or events to change or fix a pre-existing event (Daniel in "Because You Left"). Both have the power to change what has already happened or what will, although Course Correction still applies (Charlie's Death).
Thanks for reading my first LOST theory!
I'm sure somewhere in that post I contradicted myself or made some silly spelling errors, so please forgive me.
I am almost positive that I have taken fragments of ideas that I've read on this site and added them to my own so sorry about that.
If you agree or disagree be sure to comment and post why!
