Forgive me if these points have been made before...there are so many theories that I'm sure mine are bits and pieces I've read and assimilated.
I think Smokey is a collective conscious. Meaning, when you die, you become part of Smokey and can appear when needed. I began thinking about this when Bea begged to be shot and Mikhail never seemed to die. It seemed to me that Dharma knew that death was only relegated to the body...not the consciousness...just like time travel was mental, not physical.
Take Charlie...when he was 'released' from his body, he was able to appear to Hurley and actually 'be there'. The same with Ben's mother and pretty much everyone else. The question is, why didn't Charlie go back and prevent his death? Or did he move back in time and make sure Desmond turned the failsafe key and 'unstuck his consciousness' and was able to keep Charlie (his body) alive to do what the universe needed, which was to deal with the Looking Glass? Of course, the Charlie that was moving through the original course wouldn't have known but then he couldn't have..it's been hinted that meeting one's future or past self could have catastrophic consequences. It wouldn't surprise me if Sawyer, in watching the birth of Aaron, (as has been shown happens in the upcoming season) was the one responsible for getting help there quickly (without anyone knowing) and other future people were responsible for the 'lucky' things that kept happening or the downright weird things that hap! pen continuously. Such as Claire's disappearing (that could've been a future Sawyer or Christian or ANYONE she felt comfortable with).
Another thing, I'm wondering what the link is between the freighters now on the island could be. Charlotte was born there, perhaps, Miles could be Candle's baby and Farraday was there because Desmond had already visited him in the past and became his constant so Farraday has been moving toward the island since that encounter. As for Naomi and Lapidus, we know Lapidus' connection as the one who was supposed to be flying 815 but I think there's more to it than that. It wouldn't surprise me if Lapidus was a Dharma member and when he died, he led "himself" back for whatever showdown is on the way.
And there's a big one coming, I'm afraid.
I also wondered about Ben's comment that Widmore 'changed the rules' when he had his daughter murdered. Again, just a theory but with the exception of the Paolo and Nikki episode (which, IMHO was just filler) every death that has happened has been responsible for introducing a significant. Boone's opened many doors for many characters, as did Shannon's. Desmond's murdering (Clancy-am blank on the name) was responsible for the airplane crash, Charlie's to prevent the island from being compromised and Ana Lucia and Libby's being Michael's willing to die to save the island. Think he would've been willing had he not put a bullet in them? That being said, Alex's death served no 'purpose'...it didn't happen because the Island or fate or destiny demanded it...it was done gratuitously by Keamy.
God, I feel like I'm talking in circles and I really hope I'm a little clear on the thoughts that SEEM to make sense in my head. If not, chalk it up to lack of sleep. Thanks for letting me at least TRY to write what is floating around in my head.
