A happy and healthy new year to all.

Firstly, a quote from Wikipedia, the obsessed Lost researcher’s faithful friend :
There are 42 Gods and Goddesses of Egypt, personifying the principles of Ma'at, who ask questions of the departed, while Thoth records the answers, and the deceased's heart is weighed against the feather of Truth (Ma'at). These 42 correspond to the 42 Nomes (Governmental Units) of Egypt. If the departed successfully answers all 42, s/he becomes an Osiris.
RECAP/OTHERS/EXILES
The island’s artifacts are a failsafe for the human race, if self-destruction is imminent. Their power and purpose were only partly understood by Dharma, who had at least one bad incident during experiments. Those who misuse the artifacts may disturb time, effect changes to their own past, or open gateways to places best avoided. Only the Others know the island’s true purpose, and more about how the artifacts are used. The secrets are important enough for a community of people to have existed for centuries, dedicated to protecting the island.
We may not see an episode explaining who the island’s original inhabitants were, but presumably they would have had an Egyptian connection, based on the glyphs marking the artifacts. They may well have been exiles from the land that worshipped Aten, the sun God. It is believed that the sun travels through the Duat [Egyptian Underworld] between dusk and dawn. Perhaps the exiles headed east across the Pacific to greet the rising sun.
Having found the island, or more likely the island having found them, it may at first have seemed that Aten had guided them to sanctuary. But their hopes of having reached the promised land would have been shattered, once they realized the island was more than it seemed, when it started testing them. If they too saw apparitions of the dead, they would have begun to associate the island with the Duat.
I think that the artifacts were already there, not built by the Egyptian exiles, just marked by them. The glyphs on that secret door in Ben Linus’s Dharma house can be loosely interpreted as ‘Protect the Master’. This suggests that they had a hierarchy in which one, or very few people were allowed to operate the artefacts.
THE MIRACLE OF JOHN, BENJAMIN’S ACT OF FAITH.
And John, a cripple with a broken back, was cured by the island as soon as he fell to its shores. Then John was approached by the Spirit while he was hunting. Within the Spirit John beheld images, and he believed he had seen into the heart of the island. He felt new purpose, and believed that his destiny was linked to the island. But although John had visions, and acted upon them, he had not yet learned the ways of leadership, and the Lost did not trust him.
Thus John was driven by the will of the island to undo some of the works of Dharma, and his actions unwittingly suited Benjamin’s purpose. For the vessels, beacons and markers used by Dharma to bring their supplies, and travel to and from the island, were destroyed.
Then Charles Widmore spoke to the Usurpers. “Mercenaries shall search the Great Ocean. When the island is found again, we will not rest until Benjamin is our prisoner. New scientists will be taken to the island, so that the work of Dharma will go on. We shall make more antidote to the plague, for we shall have power over who lives and dies. And the world will serve and fear us, when the island is ours.”
And the mercenaries found the island, but were defeated by the Lost and Chosen. During the battle Benjamin’s summoned a serpent creature, also in the form of black smoke, from the underworld, for he was master of the artefacts. And the creature was similar in form to Apep, from Egyptian mythology, and mortally wounded one of the mercenaries. When the mercenaries returned later, Benjamin slew their leader.
Then Benjamin accepted his leadership of the Chosen was at an end, as Jacob now spoke only to John. Benjamin had also offended the island by misuse of the artefacts, and feared the Spirit would punish him. But he knew the island had been found by the Usurpers. And in one final act of faith, he turned the wheel of one of the artefacts, for this moved the vortex of time containing the island. Thus the island again became invisible to the Usurpers. And Benjamin passed through a gateway to a far continent, and resolved to fight the enemies of the island in the outer world.
