I claim no definitive theory, these are just musings of mine and I may change my opinion by the next episode.
In these musings, I refer to ‘the manipulators’ as those who are ultimately guiding things. Right now candidates are Ms Hawking, Widmore, Ben, Abbadon, but as with everything in Lost, it may turn out these people are just mere window dressing.
I am thinking of ‘the street’ the metaphor which Daniel used to describe time.
The street is the path through time/space-time, and the rules we now know, say you can not change the ‘street’ or where it goes, you can not create a new street, but there is nothing to stop you viewing the street and interactively experiencing it as our losties are.
When I think of a street, I automatically think of it as ‘point a to point b’. How ‘long’ the street is could only be determined by traversing it i.e. Distance=speed/time.
If I know all the relevant measurements of the street (& I am sure there is a lot) then it must be possible to conceive of either ‘remotely viewing’ or observing that street from any given point. If you think otherwise, go to Google Earth or think about geosynchronous satellites and triangulation. For this is what they do. In the world of Lost, there is an extension to this ‘viewing’, a fully interactive experience of actually being there.
I believe the true-manipulators of this story we know as LOST have all the necessary information needed to observe & interact with the street, and I will say later why I think that whatever it is they are trying to avoid on this street has already happened.
You can never change the outcome itself i.e. the specific event, but you could intervene in ways which change the nature of the outcome i.e. a nuclear war would be a disaster for all, but if some had the foresight to build a bunker replete with supplies, then it would still be a disaster, but not as disastrous for the some. With that foresight comes the opportunity to continue to exist and possibly to rebuild.
If you knew humanity was coming to an end via some catastrophe, as it seems Alvar Hanso did, you would have to accept that you could not prevent the catastrophe itself, but if you could manipulate time , you could change things which did not violate the catastrophe chronology i.e. the end would always be inevitable like in Terminator 3, but you could feasibly change how you & others fared come that day.
Hence the Island. The last refuge. A place where you and others could survive the doom, perhaps even repopulate the planet. It could not just be any old place though. The coming catastrophe would see that no place was safe.
But what if you could engineer a place, a type of singularity, hidden from nature yet nonetheless real, no different from the singularities that physicists describe today. Any good physics journal or book will tell you that the known laws of physics break down in these constructs, that nature abhors them. Reminds me of Ben telling Locke “even God can’t see this place’.
But all good singularities don’t just occur; they are the result of some cosmic process, a supernova, a black hole. Some event of huge energy. The LHC was tentatively reported as being capable of producing black-holes which would ‘swallow the earth’. But all physicists know that black holes come in a variety of sizes, and to generate one capable of swallowing the Earth from inside would have to be of magnitudes way above what the LHC could ever produce.
No wormholes, well at least of any significance, can be expected from the Genevan subterranean circle. Not yet anyway.
I think in the world of Lost, that moment came and went. I think the manipulators of this story did indeed open a wormhole/singularity. You don’t often see these two terms being bandied in the same phrase, as one is a place where physics breaks down (singularity) where everything is reduced to some sort of unbelievably minute state & the other is a place where an unbelievably minute state is expanded to a huge state (wormhole).
I think the island is an unwitting creation of the manipulators. I think they opened up a wormhole and that wherever they ended up was like a type of singularity, a place where physics broke down, and possibly where miracles happen.
A dimension of its own, the space in-between space, a twilight-zone of time and space yet still connected to the universe. Isolated of course, the singularity or ‘island-in-time’ that it is, separated seemingly by the vast ocean or universe that surrounded it ,but if you knew enough you could traverse between them, possibly by appearances of a submarine, but in reality it’s all electromagnetism and consciousness. I think that the exotic matter or negative energy they used to open the wormhole ended up concentrated in this dimension to a place that would later be built upon and called the Orchid.
I believe the Valenzetti equation is a cosmic string frequency ‘constant’ i.e. the exact values of the reverse wave-equation for time. All physicists will acknowledge that there is no real reason why time can not run backwards, quantum physics shows it is symmetrically-reversible.
Everyone keeps talking about how the island moved, yet the first 2 episodes of season5 hint that it is possibly the people themselves who are moving. Richard said to Locke it was Locke who disappeared, not him or their group. It seems almost as if Locke and the beach-crew are interlopers in time now. Now they are here, now they are there. Just like Charlie. Just like the rabbit(s) in the Orchid.
The whole island I believe was already unbound in time by its very nature and existence. But then these pesky scientists came along and drilled into the very energy which created this unbound place in the first place! I think they caused some feedback problem and time leaked and the universe/ocean surrounding this island in time is course correcting with a vengeance, abhorring and exterminating this anomaly.
The manipulators thought they had a haven, a refuge, and more importantly, Time to do what they must, except, in their manipulations of time, in this place, the one factor the manipulators lost control of, was time itself.
For me, when Desmond turned that fail-safe key, it wasn’t just about his trippy experience, It said to me that Life, consciousness, the ‘human experience’, whatever you want to call it, & most certainly in the world of Lost, is not confined to any singular moment or instant of time. We all saw Desmond (& Minkowski since) experience this ‘human experience’ in a non-conventional linear way, now they are here & then they are there: Charlie “I am dead but I’m also here”, I think that is just another unconventional linearity from our limited points of view {only fools are enslaved by time & space}.
I think that the failsafe-key turning was a more pivotal moment than we may have expected. It did more than just heighten Desmond’s experiences, it also spared the other three hatch occupants from a most certain grisly imploding doom.
In the Lost world, death is certainly not the end. And so I come to think that Charlie is not so different from our ‘interlopers’ is he not a ‘time’ interloper himself? His body certainly met a fluid-filled conclusion, but his ‘life experience’ his electromagnetic consciousness on that island did not end.
Makes me also think of when Jack says to Ben regards Locke that ‘he is dead…right?” & Ben does not answer. Locke’s body may be at rest, but I bet on that island, he is interloping somewhere.
You know, when it all comes down to it, now that we know Time is ‘of the essence’ ‘Time is the essence’ is it not simpler to see that whatever the catastrophe, it has already happened. The end of the world already came.
Those who seek to manipulate their own ‘experience’ of this event, find themselves battling it out with quantum-physics itself. Destiny is always leading them towards this end, but they fight back as to how they get there & hence how they fare after.
Hmmm. So what if you use huge amounts of energy to open a wormhole & the result is a hidden-land in another dimension, well a hidden-land at least as far as the universe is concerned. With enough time and mastery of traversing could you not could create your own laboratory. A real BIG laboratory.
A place where you can manipulate events to bring the smartest minds on the planet together, but you could not do it overtly, not because of destiny, but because of humanity. If humanity truly knew what was coming that fact in itself would change everything. You would do it secretly, and for those involved who are working for you, you would tell them they were ‘saving the world. The truth. But not as they know it.
Saving the world is a phrase. A more apt phrase for Lost would be ‘Saving the world for those who knew left’.
But in their manipulations, in their quest to cheat fate, fate itself kept course-correcting, and not always even-handedly. This one time, at band-camp, time & space them-selves broke free when the manipulators drilled too far. A leak of causality. The hidden-land is no longer hidden from the universe. The singularity is revealed. The universe responds with a course-correction of huge magnitude. One which forced the manipulators into a corner.
A corner called failsafe.
When backed into this corner, the manipulators had one choice only. They plugged that leak. Finally. With the turn of that key, they thought they could resolve the problem, maybe even thinking things on the island would revert to before the leak. But they were wrong. Very wrong, and fate would give them hell for it.
They lacked the courage to plug the leak when the incident first happened because they knew that when time leaks, it’s all over. All you could do was stop it from leaking, & try to change events so it didn’t leak.
You could try to change this event because the leak, the incident was not in fate’s original plan. It does not hinder the end, it probably only encourages it.
The problem was that time had leaked and that changed everything. Reminds me of Jin in Hurley’s dream ‘everything will change’. Reminds me of the room 23 video ‘everything changes’.
The swan stabilised the leak but that’s all. That’s all it ever could do. A literal stop-gap, a pause while the manipulators tried desperately to change things.
From the moment of the incident and the drilling, the release of energy destabilised this island laboratory and it’s time-frame. It has never been normal since. The implosion of the swan did not stop the end of the world, pushing the button never did or would save the world. It only preserved some part of the manipulators frame of reference. Doomsday is still coming.
The turning of that frozen-donkey-wheel I believe was simply another failsafe.
Another act of mathematical desperation. An escape, and undoubtedly not the first, from the many routes that fate throws.
However, I believe it was the first time which the ‘wheel-failsafe’ had been used after the incident-leak. The island had not been ‘moved’ before or after the incident. There would be consequences. And fate, in return would give hell again. I believe we are already witnessing this.
I believe the incident and the leak of time will account for many of the island’s strange phenomena, coupled with the knowledge that death is not the end in a place where time, electromagnetism & consciousness are major players.
Finally, Dharma, the hapless workers unwittingly toiling for the manipulators. Their whole ethic ultimately boils down to ‘The one true way’. Well I believe that the manipulators know there is ONE and ONE way only i.e. one possible path through fate which has some justifiable ends for them. Quantum physics, mathematics all point the way, but there is only one way and they must do what they must to get there.
This could ultimately mean that the end justifies the means. So murder is not murder, it is just a relative time-frame of possible events. Maybe Ben is not such a bad guy after all.
