In the original timeline, everyone on Flight 815 died-that’s why Widmore planted the fake wreckage so it would still appear that way. In the original timeline, Desmond did not leave Penelope and end up on the island, but stayed and married her. As Ms. Hawkings told Desmond, the most important thing he will ever do is to push that button. Since in the original timeline, Desmond did not push the button-he was planted by Dharma/Widmore to miss pushing the button causing the release of the electromagnetism and causing Flight 815 to crash onto the island. Why would they want to change destiny by having people survive who were originally supposed to die? Because we would be affecting the Valenzetti Equation by manipulating population and keeping that small few in a contained environment to change one of the factors that determines the end of the world and mankind. This contained environment would hopefully be ! safe from course correcting, but unfortunately, some have still managed to die anyway as they were originally supposed to do so. Ms. Hawking, Libby, etc, still are the temporal policeman to make sure everything happens in this second timeline. What the island and inhabitants are, is another story…
