RECAP. Previously on Lost Testament....
Basic theory : The Lost island is where an important intervention in human affairs will begin. Jacob has been chosen by the island to prepare its inhabitants for the Regeneration of humankind. Here is his job description.
“So, no pressure, Jacob, just look after this island for the time being. One day some pretty nasty things are going to happen to the outer world, but you and your people will have the last laugh. By the way, until the Regeneration, of which we spoke of before, your women can’t give birth here if the pregnancy begins on the island. So then, same routine every day for about one hundred and sixty years. Waiting, and more waiting.
However there are some perks to the job, old son, special privileges just for you. Want to know what’s happening in the world? Want to know if there’s anyone useful out there who wants a long holiday on the Costa del Lost? Sleep on it, you miserable old sea dog, and when you wake up you’ll be in the know, with a nice list of names. Visions! That’s the way forward. Some of the dreams will be a bit vivid, though, wake up in a fever and all that. But it will make you a great leader, it’ll all be worth the lack of sleep.
If you dream of a bad tempered old boar in the forest, don’t send out the fruit pickers, tell the hunters exactly were to find the beast. A couple of hours later they will be back singing your praises and will get the barbecue fired up. Happy days. They will love you!
Alpert is going to get you trained up on those wierd machines with the funny writing on, and after that you will truly be the master of the island. Send Alpert to any continent on the world in an instant. He will recruit whoever you want and bring them back. A word of warning though, Jacob, so try to get your head around this one. The island is a nexus of time lines which will mess you up if you misuse those artefacts. If you don’t want the rest of your life to be eternal déjà-vu, then listen to Alpert, he’s a constant source of good advice during bad times.”
PART 4. RULE OF JACOB
Jacob’s people lived well, protected by his visions, and were ruled by the Book of Laws. Food was plentiful, and they suffered no disease, but they felt cursed. For the long life granted to them could not ease the burden of waiting. “Release us from the island” some of them begged of Jacob. “We cannot endure the task, and wish to live normal lives.”
“Those who leave shall not rest, for the island will torment them until they return” said Jacob, “And if you are killed in the outer world, your souls will return, but you shall be denied the reward of Regeneration.”
And when they asked him about the Regeneration, Jacob said that the Spirit of the island had forbidden him to speak of it. For he had seen this future in his dreams. And if he were to describe the devastation which he had seen, to the Chosen, they would fear this future and lose hope. So he asked them to trust him, as they did in all other matters.
Thus Jacob was troubled, and summoned the Spirit in the forest. But when he asked if he could allow some of the Chosen time in the outer world, the black smoke was angered. “Do not scatter the Chosen, Jacob! For if the men beget children in the outer world, they too must be brought here. The Creator will not allow the seed of the Chosen to flourish on the Earth until the Regeneration. And if your exiled brother should by chance recognise and interrogate one of the Chosen, he would find the way back here. Send no-one from the Black Rock! Only Alpert, and others you have recruited, and trust, who are unknown to him.”
“But my brother lives the long life granted to him without restriction. Will he not have descendants?”
“Your brother was not here long enough to become entirely as the Chosen are, Jacob. He was granted long life, and has become rich, but his vision is limited. Now he spends much of his wealth seeking the island. But you must prevent his return, because his ambition will destroy the island and extinguish humankind.” A furnace of conflicting emotions prevented Jacob from replying, but the Spirit sensed the unspoken questions.
“Jacob, if the artefacts are under the control of one who seeks only wealth and power, they could be used to summon malevolence from the Abyss. Your brother would be enslaved to the will of the Destroyer.
“You wonder why you have not been sent to imprison or kill him, for the greater good, or if the island would slay him as soon as he found it? Believe me when I say your brother has his part to play in the Regeneration, but he must remain in the outer world. Alpert will teach you how to move the island, if this is the only way to prevent your brother’s return.”
