THE LOST TESTAMENT
SCIENCE AND FAITH
Consider that the universe is billions of light years across and still expanding. Maybe think about what is outside the universe, or whether ours is the only one. Remind yourself that you see the stars in the night sky as they were, not as they are. Does that mean you are seeing the past, and that light from stars is sent into the future?
A scientific mind would analyse such ideas, applying the science we already know, and even a bit of thinking ‘outside the box’, to provide theories and answers. Some avoid such thoughts, and may have been conditioned during their lives not to question the universe. The answers to all unknowns will be provided by their religion or whatever dogma they live by.
You may have faith of a different kind, believing planet Earth and humans have been created for a purpose. Are convinced we were meant to survive the environmental and social problems our lifestyles have caused. You believe in Creation, and a Creator, but accept scientific progress and proofs as part of the grand plan for humankind.
But there is another possibility, which I believe will emerge by the end of ‘Lost’. If you believe in Creation, then you must believe the Creator has the power to intervene, perhaps not for the first time, to protect the Earth. You accept human activities are being watched, and that we will be prevented from ruining the planet.
It follows that the Creator commands technology beyond anything we can imagine. It could be brought to the Earth on the day of intervention, or it could already be here. And this, I believe, is the secret of our beloved island. A failsafe, hidden from the rest of the human race. It would explain the existence and attitude of the Others, a people preparing for a future known only to them. They would be sworn to protect the island and its secrets by whatever means necessary.
That’s the theory, and if such an important event of intervention were to occur, the surviving religions would then be obliged to record it. After all, some have not added to their scriptures for centuries.
More posts will follow, if allowed, with the intention of embellishing the intervention theory above. They will be in the form of quotations from an imaginary future scripture, called ‘The Lost Testament’, which would have recorded events on the ‘Lost’ island. My apologies to people of faith and people of science for any offence caused.
THE BEGINNING OF THE END
.…and the Creator saw that humans would fail to endure upon the Earth. For although they had achieved much, they would never unify as one to meet the challenges of the Universe. And their self-destruction was nigh, for their greed was consuming the planet. So an island was made on the Great Ocean of the Earth as a place of regeneration. The land was fertile and bountiful, so that those allowed to live there would not suffer hunger or thirst. Upon the island were placed artefacts of great power and intricacy. Human minds could not comprehend their design, for they did not yet understand the shape of the universe, or the nature of space and time.
The artefacts controlled the vortex of time within which the island was hidden upon the Great Ocean, and opened gateways to all the continents of the Earth. For they caused disturbance to the surrounding light and air, thus the island was invisible. And the island could be found by chance only, by those who were lost in storms on the edge of the vortex.
Are the activities of the human race being monitored by a higher power? Would there be intervention if our existence, or that of the planet, was under threat? Is the island being prepared as the place of Intervention?
PROTECTORS OF THE VORTEX
Then the Creator placed a Spirit upon the island, to study the minds and motives of the Lost who had reached its shores. For some would fear the island and attempt escape. But others would be chosen to do the Creator’s work, and this was given to them through the Spirit.
And the Spirit could take the form of any person, living or dead. For the Creator allowed apparitions of the dead to appear through the Spirit, to offer guidance to the Lost. The Spirit could take many other forms, and could mimic sounds in likeness to those it had heard on the island. And it could move as an invisible beast, striking terror into the hearts of those who heard it approach. Its appearance otherwise was of black smoke, and the Creator placed a duty upon it to protect the island and the Chosen.
And the island seemed both terrifying and miraculous to the Lost. Where they not cured of disease? Did not the wounds of their flesh heal quickly? But in sleep strange dreams afflicted them, and when the events of their dreams came to pass on the island, they knew visions had been granted to them. Some learned how to act upon their visions, for they believed the island was guiding them. And the black smoke did not approach those who had faith in the island. They became content, sensing a future in which the island was the only place of hope for humankind. And they dedicated their lives to protecting it.
But some denied their visions and struggled against the will of the island, for they could not accept a new beginning, or forsake their former lives. Resisting the island turned their dreams into nightmares, and they could not rest. They became tormented, unable to separate past from future, or accept guidance from the dead. And if the Spirit sensed within them a threat to the island or the Chosen, the black smoke would find them and their lives were forfeit.
