This is my fourth Theory in less than a month... As you can see this hiatus has done nothing but tempt my patience... So far i'm losing the battle of waiting... But none the less here we go...
Now, this theory isn't a theory of how LOST will end or how LOST works it is at its core a theory on the main theme of LOST. As we all know LOST has many themes, but i am here to talk about the most obvious theme. It is so obvious in fact that it is at times looked over.
Perception vs. Reality...
LOST main theme is the fact that our perceptions usually cloud reality...Think about it... we'll start off with the Characters:
THE CHARACTERS: [season 1]
In season one we met the Losties [all 48 of em] and in the first episode us viewers had our perceptions of each character just as each character had their own perceptions or assumptions of each other:
- Sawyer blamed Sayid for the crash
- Everyone Thought Locke was weird because of his knives
- Hurley almost pissed his pants when he saw Kate's mug picture
- And Michael Thought Jin had attacked him because of his race...
- And everyone thought Sawyer was an evil, self centered, a**hole.
Throughout the series all of thos assumptions were [although at times practical] false. Sayid did not cause the plane crash, Locke [although still kinda weird] turned out to be different, Hurley was never harmed by Kate, Jin attacked Michael over a watch not race, and Saywer had inner turmoil that made him come off rude but now he's loveable and a hero.
[Season 2]:
The tallies were introduced in Season two and at a first glance, they were thought to be "The Others"... People hated Ana Lucia, No one understod Mr. Eko...
The Others... In season two the others were seen as a tribal group that were native to the island. They seemed all powerful and knowing of everything "island"...
but in season 3 we saw the more human side of the others...
The point is... Is that the overall theme of LOST is not Science Vs. Faith or Good Vs. Evil... It's the fact being good or evil is too ambiguous and ambiguity leads to speculation, which then leads to a persons own perception of something or someone. Someone's perception of someone else can be incorrect but its the fact that they believe it to be true that makes it "their" reality...
LOST is one big reveal... It starts in the unknown then slowly but surely sheds light on areas and things which completely change your perceptions of things, people, and events...
a quote comes to mind that i think hugely factors into LOST...
"Get your facts first; and then you can distort them as much as you please." - Mark Twain
Perception Vs. Reality is the overall theme of LOST it encompasses themes such as Good vs. Evil and Science Vs. Faith... Basically LOST is telling us that there is nothing major that distinguishes the good guys from the bad guys and vice versa... It all depends on our perception...
Example: The Radical Changes These Characters Have Gone Through Since Season 1 - 4:
Jack- hero to suicidal
Kate - nomadic criminal to stay at home mom
Sawyer - problematic islander/con man to heroic stud
Sayid - intelligent rational thinking person to assassin for Ben
Ben - Man always in Charge to Improvisational, Off Island Man
Juliet - Other to Lostie
