Ok first i just wanna say i'm real tired and i'm writing this while it's all fresh in my mind, so apologies for lazy mistakes!
As LOST has progressed the fun loving teddy bear we know as hurley has become of more and more importance. I think the fact he saw Jacob's cabin makes him extremely special. i don't think he's special in a prophetic way like Locke and Christian, but in more of a "i see dead people" sort of way. Jacob appears incorporeal, or certainly not stuck in one timeline, or whatever. and i think this is why hurley can see him. it could be possible the people who have died have become unstuck in time, they appear at certain times in full corporeal form, for example when charlie slaps Hurley in the beginning of the end.
ok so here it is, the numbers curse does seem to exist i think this due to the fact that leonard went crazy, Sam toomy shot himself in the mouth and Hurley was cursed with bad luck. I think the numbers represent Death. not in the way we know it but in the way LOST knows it. The producers did say that claire being dead is up to how you define death on the show. The heiroglyphs on the countdown numbers spell out underworld. this could just be a way of saying the death, the numbers were after all created by VALLENZETTI to predict the END OF HUMANITY. So Basically it means the underworld is coming.
i think the sickness is the sickness from the numbers, what makes me think this is that Martha Toomey told Hurley about Sam's experience with the numbers. i believe Sam heard these numbers from the island, Martha tells hurley about how he was stationed out in the pacific for the navy, which is where a portal to the island is or was. and apparently he worked on a submarine and was bored all the time, Leonard Simms was also on the sub as his partner. And one night the numbers came through as interference through the speakers and they repeated over and over. My guess is that the sub was picking up radio signals from the island. We know about rosseau's sos broadcast and her knowledge of the radio tower. I believe the radio tower was broadcasting the signal to Sam and Leonard.
I believe the mystery sickness that wiped out rosseau's expidition is from the broadcast of the numbers from the radio tower. it sent them mad and they eventually died. I also feel it's backed up by appearing on the vaccination bottles. it sees strange for them to appear if not related in any way. Also i feel this is why rosseau had a note of the numbers that made hurley go and find her.
Ok back to Sam i find it strange such a minor character has a such a detailed account of how he died. and i also find it strange that another minor character related to the numbers should have one too that's exactly the same. This was Sam Radzinsky from the hatch, Kelvin tells desmond, radzinsky shot himself through the mouth with a shotgun, and martha toomey tells hurley that Sam Shot himself in the mouth with a shotgun. Could they be the same guy, i'm not sure how it would work, but it could. I believe Sam somehow got to the island, we know after he heard the numbers on board for some amount of time, he had to go back to australia, and that's when bad things started to happen. Martha tells the story of how sam won a "guess how many jelly beans in a jar" contest using the numbers and after that they had a car crash and Martha lost her leg. She says that bad things happened after that so he moved her to the middle of the Australian outback where no acidents could happen.
I believe after leaving Martha in the safe of the outback, he went to find the source of the numbers.I believe he went to the co-ordinates in the pacific and found the island. he explored around for clues to the numbers, Getting to know the island really well he started to discover hatches scattered around and eventually found the hatch and the numbers. if there was someone already in there i think they duped him into entering the numbers. i think sam used a fake alias as "Sam radzinsky" we know that Radzinsky's initial is S. The only real flaw is that Martha knows how sam killed himself, although she doesn't say where it's a bit strange to think she would've heard from the island. So a possible way around this is that Sam Seperated in to two different Sam's when he found the island, and the island course corrected by having them both kill themselves.
it's also strange that leonard was in Santa Rosa hospital with Hurley, bit of a coincidence that hurley was the one who heard the numbes then later crashed on an island that needed the numbers to be entered every 108 minutes. Leonard is not very chatty but he reacts to hurley quite angrily when hurley tells him he used the numbers to win the lottery, sayin "now you've opened the box". So by thinking back we guess that the numbers only seem to take effect when they're used to win something. Hurley used them to win the lottery and then his bad luck started resulting in numerous deaths, and Sam used the numbers for the Jelly bean competition and won then straight away after they had a car crash and his bad luck started to happen. I think Leonard was ok until Sam used the numbers to win, then he opened the box and bad luck happened.
I think the curse of the numbers is death in the "lost" way not the way percieve it, Hurley has repeatedly said that death follows him. The numbers where made to represent death and predict death. I think the sickness is "death" and due to the numbers. I believe death is fluttering out of timelines or becoming unstuck in time. I think the Dharama "incident" was indeed the creation of the smoke monster, i think the monster was made to keep the souls of the Dead in one timeline but was created in some way by using the numbers. I think the device started to absord the conscience of those who had died on the island or unstuck in time. I think this gave the monster it's own conscience and it was completely out of dharma's control, having a conscience would be having the ability to judge, to know right and wrong. I believe the monster is owned by or is controlled by Jacob but that's a whole different ball game!
