Since young Bem Linus have the encounter with Richard Alpert in the jungle we’ve asking who and what is Richard Alpert.
While we think about him, Matthew Abaddon came. From the start he seems one of the confident mens from Widmore or even DHARMA. Or both...
For me, after Abaddon and Locke encounter in hospital, while Locke was trying recovering yourself, Abaddon became a greater mystery, beyond a simple “employee” of DHARMA or Widmore.
In this moment, Abaddon enjoy to the same team of Alpert. At least in the past...
I have almost certain about one thing: Alpert and Abaddon are the same “thing”, have the same “essence”. What this essence is still very complex to understand, but both must be a important part of the Island civilization.
Anyway, i believe that this two mens are like some “Agents from Universe”, who try to direct de Island future. They’re beyond time, beyond space. The timeline is different for them, there’s no a pattern. This, probably, is cause by Island. But, we always have two sides. LOST give us a lot of samples of that already. And could not be different between Alpert and Abaddon. One of them fighting against the other, one making everything possible to return to the Island e another trying do avoid this...
We don't know what is gonna happen until series finale, so is hard to know who is the good guy and who is the bad guy. But, we can bet...
I bet that Alpert is the good guy. And I'll show you my reasons...
Both characters names have interesting references. This is not my “knowledge area”, anyway, this mystical-religious, but its will be use by me as a base for my bet in Alpert and the follow analogy.
There’s a Richard Alpert, and we can find out others informations if we research as Ram Dass. He is a psychologist that use some psychedelic drugs in his research, in Harvard and was dismissed. After this, he traveled to India, where knows the Hinduism and receive the name Ram Dass, that means “God Serve”.
But Abaddon came from the other side. This name came from Hebraic and means “destruction”, and Abaddon was the leader of rebels from Caligastia, Satan and Lucifer allies, on the Lucifer Rebellion.
Well, only this already explain why i think that Alpert is the “good guy”, the “White peon” of Locke’s Backgammon.

And now i talk about analogy. The Island could be a “Divine Kingdom” to Alpert and Abaddon. But Abaddon, for some reason, was expelled and now make everything to find and return, with Widmore.
Alpert and Abaddon would be, lets say, like angels. But i prefer “Agents of Universe”, because the Island characteristics (and by pseudo-science theories) give to them the habillity to be beyond time and space.
Now, Alpert defend the Island and Abaddon want to return...
