This is my first attempt at explaining my theory to the big picture of lost. This theory is kind of hard to put into words and my thoughts tend to jump around. Please forgive me if it seems a bit out there…
The universe of Lost is divided into different time lines with their own different outcomes. Each different timeline has its own predetermined course or destiny. This could maintain with what has been stated by Ms. Hawking if events in one possible outcome, the outcome for that timeline or universe are what must be course corrected. This may allow that in another life the predetermined outcome would be different. If there are several different enclosed time lines with their own predetermined outcome then a person might be destined to have a better life in a time line other than their native one. At the heart of the island is a device that allows you to travel to another point in time in a completely different timeline. The area of effect of this device creates its own pocket of space time. The island, or at least the area encompassing and surrounding the island, is not part of any time line.
The island itself is the only place devoid of a predetermined possible outcome and has no need of course correction. Basically the island is the only place that freewill actually exists as it is not a part of any timeline itself. Willpower is the only true power on the island since events are not predetermined. This is the reason people are healed by the island, they will it to happen. John wanted to walk, Rose wanted to live and Jin wanted to have a child. Ben wanted Jack to want to save his life because he is aware of the power of will on the island. The pure freedom of will on the island creates the paradox that causes fatal miscarriages. The baby must will to be born or it will not be born.
To be clear, I believe that Desmond was wrong about Charlie having to die on the island and that his visions were man-made. Charlie decided for himself that he was going to die and willed it into happening. The characters on the island are having their freewill hijacked to produce events on the island, more about that later...
Eventually a timeline discovered how to access the pocket of time and the Dharma initiative was born. The Dharma initiative or D.I. discovered the land mass they had found in the pocket of time was really layered upon a machine. They dug hatches down to different parts of it and discovered the incredible technology. The timeline the D.I. originally came from was destined to soon end in the extinction of humanity which had been discovered with the Valenzetti equation. The D.I. mistook the technology for just time travel not realizing it was a tool to travel between different destinies. In order to try and stop their own timelines impending doom they mistakenly sent people back in time but into a completely different timeline. The people sent into the past of the different timeline would pollute that time line and set up the same conditions of the Valenzetti equation. As that timeline progressed into the future the same mistake would be repeated as people were sent into t! he past of yet another timeline.
Eventually two more timelines discovered the island and what had been occurring on it. One of these timelines was already polluted by the Valenzetti equation and mankind was destined to be annihilated. The other timeline was not yet polluted and still destined to thrive. Both of these factions are fighting to control the island. The faction from the time line that is doomed wants to use the island to escape into the time line destined to succeed. The other faction is trying to prevent these people from polluting and destroying their own timeline. Who so ever controls the island is able to send their people into the other time line. I believe one of these factions includes Charles Widmore, Ms. Hawking and the Monk from the Monastery. This Faction is from the unpolluted time line. The only member of the second faction that has been revealed so far is Abaddon and he is from the time line that is doomed. In their war the RULES of engagement are that you cannot kill anyone fr! om a timeline that is not one of the two competing timelines.
There is a third faction in the battle for control of the island which is led by Jacob the original creator of the travel device. Jacob is pulling people out of their own timelines in order to prevent either of the other two factions from gaining control of the island with people they cannot kill. This is essentially what the Others are, people pulled from their destinies in order to restore balance to the overall symphony of time lines that have been polluted. Ben knew that the only way for him to have a child that was safe from both factions would be to import one.
The Losties were not brought to the island by Jacob, they were sent by one of the competing timelines. The Widmore faction sent Desmond to the island, the connection is obvious enough. To counter this Abaddon sent the Losties to the island, case in point John Locke. In retaliation Widmore sent the Freighter to the island. Keamy is the perfect ruthless mercenary imported from an uninvolved timeline. Keamy was not hindered by the ROE and was able to kill whomever he wanted. Both Abaddon and the Others infiltrated the freighter so in reality all three factions were present on it.
Jacob has lived so long on the island and has such a complete understanding of how time space works outside of predetermination that he has no physical form. Jacob is made of pure will and if undeterred by other powerful wills can control what happens on the island. Smokey is literally the time space devices security system. It tries to make you so scared that believe you are going to die and through this belief tricks into willing yourself dead. Smokey can also read your mind and create delusions or illusions to guide your will to suit its purposes. Someone who is not afraid of Smokey and has a determined will is impervious to the security system.
The Losties were not brought to the island by Jacob, they were sent by one of the competing timelines. The Widmore faction sent Desmond to the island, the connection is obvious enough. To counter this Abaddon sent the Losties to the island, case in point John Locke. In retaliation Widmore sent the Freighter to the island. Keamy was a mercenary imported from an uninvolved timeline and was not hindered by the rules. Both Abaddon and the Others infiltrated the freighter so in reality all three factions were present on it.
It was vital for the others to make the Losties believe they landed on a normal island. They had to prioritize taking the children because children are able to believe that impossible things can happen. If someone can believe in the impossible they can will the impossible into reality with very dangerous effects. Walt has an exceptionally indomitable will and creative mind which made him extra dangerous. The other had to remove the threat of his presence at all costs. Because the Others could not take the children undetected the second most important objective of the others was making sure those they could not take really believed they had crashed on a normal island. They covered their tracks by pretending to be savages that were trapped on the island as well.
John Locke was the first to realize that the island was special, he looked into the eye of the island and what he saw was beautiful. Because of his belief that the island was special he found the Swan station. John Locke’s belief in his own destiny is so strong that he does not yet realize he is not following his destiny but his destiny is following him.
As I previously stated the Losties are having their wills hijacked, perhaps the whispers activate some kind of programmed mind state which is remotely manipulated. Better yet the Losties had their timelines changed to affect what they do with their freewill in specific situations. Walt could have been conned into believing he had special powers so that he would continue to believe when he got to the island. Eko could have been conned into believing visions of his resurrected brother were really his brother from beyond the grave. There are examples of flashback events guiding the will and beliefs of every major character.
